Archive

I've gone through and archived the issues that have been resolved. The archive can be accessed here: User talk:Tvchannellists/Archive 1 Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

I've moved some of the site updates posted here to Site News & Updates. Thanks! Branch (talk) 12:06, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Spam

I'd really like to help with spam and other abuse as the wiki is getting flooded. XY007 (talk) 18:10, 23 February 2015 (AEDT)

Something should be done to try and stop the spam. Spam accounts are being created on a daily basis. ReCaptcha is useless for preventing it. Try using QuestyCaptcha. If that doesn't stop it then try changing the questions. 31.116.108.66 00:40, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
I had QuestCaptcha on previously, and changed the questions numerous times, but the spam always came back after a period. I'll try QuestyCaptcha again and see if it's any better now. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:49, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
So I've changed it to QuestyCaptcha and put new questions in. Pretty much immediately, there's been new spam, so I'm guessing the spammers have humans filling in the Captchas. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:53, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

We are starting to see a practice on Wikipedia of page vandalism. I had to revert a number of edits to the DirecTV United States lineup page because an IP address is vandalising the page changing channels to non-US version which are not on DirecTV, and even changed the Sonic channels back to Sirius XM channels which have been gone from DirecTV for over 5 years. You may have to consider restricting editing ability as Wikipedia does when pages are vandalized by the placement of false information.--Longislandmedia (talk) 21:27, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention, Longislandmedia. In the first instance, I'll send the user a notice via their talk page. If they continue to post incorrect information, I will block the IP address. If the vandalism continues even after that, I'll have to see how to implement editing ability. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:03, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Wanting to create Frontier U-Verse page

While I recently updated the AT&T Y-Verse page, but it still reflects the inclusion of the Connecticut systems which were sold to Frontier Communications. I wanted to create a separate Frontier U-Verse page using the AT&T template so that I could adjust it to reflect the variations in the Frontier systems since some channels that are on AT&T U-Verse were dropped from the Frontier line-ups and they still offer Music Choice instead of switching to Stingray like AT&T did. At which point, the AT&T line-up would be adjusted to reflect the removal of regional sports networks that are only carried on the Connecticut systems which they no longer operate. Longislandmedia (talk) 16:32, 22 June 2015 (AEDT)

Feel free to make the changes. This Wiki is mostly user-contributed, so there's no need to ask me to make the changes. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:49, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

I tacked the Frontier line-up on the bottom of the page, but it probably should be split to its own page like the FiOS lineup is.

UPC to Virgin Media

Would it be possible for you to merge the history of List of channels on UPC (Ireland) into the newly created List of channels on Virgin Media (Ireland) as the user who carried out the changes has manually moved the data from the old page to the new one instead of using the move function. Jr.2k14 (talk) 18:33, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jr.2k14. I've restored the history onto the new page. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:45, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

User: Nevalamd

I just reverted a number of edits on the DirecTV page where this user replaced some of the channel information with fake and wrong information, Just giving you a heads up.--Longislandmedia (talk) 20:05, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, Longislandmedia. I have posted a warning on the user's page and any subsequent vandalism will result in a permanent ban. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:21, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

Check some of the stuff he is posting now. Other than the XM channel page which is a decade out of date, he is creating pages for non-existent DirecTV services in Japan and Mexico. In Mexico, DirecTV's presence is through the 41% stake in SKY Mexico that it owns. The user has also created a fake XM satellite radio in Japan page. These things can be fact-checked. --Longislandmedia (talk) 06:50, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the update, Longislandmedia. I have banned the user. As you know those providers better than I do, please feel free to revert/delete the pages as you deem necessary. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:04, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

Deletion for lineup changes.

I have gone through and deleted those pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:23, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

Can you delete those pages for me please?

Can you provide a reason as to why you want them deleted? Also, please sign your posts by using four tildes. Tvchannellists (talk) 15:37, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Excuse me, I signed those posts already.

By signing, I mean typing ~~~~ after your message so that your user name or IP address and the time you posted shows up in the message (like at the end of this message). Regarding the deletion of those pages:
* List of Line-Up Changes on Frontier U-verse from the 2000s – including your edits, there have been 9 edits so far this year, so there are edits.
* List of Line-Up Changes on Frontier U-verse from the 2010s – you've made numerous edits to that page this year. Longislandmedia has also made edits to the page.
* List of Line-Up Changes on Frontier FiOS from the 2000s – given that this page is for a previous decade, since the content is already there, if it's complete, then there's no need to edit it.
* List of Line-Up Changes on Frontier FiOS from the 2010s – this page also includes the past 6 years (2010–2016), so it's not only the future.
If more users support the deletion, I will consider it then. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:53, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

IP >vandalism on List of Verizon Fios changes in the 2000's.

There are two IP addresses posting false information on this page. They are trying to endlessly assert that Verizon Fios added Boomerang Latin America and Teletoon Canada and a non-existent Discovery Toons channel in September, 2009. Every time I have removed the false information, another IP address puts the false information back in. See what you can do to stop this. --Longislandmedia (talk) 00:33, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, Longislandmedia. The IP addresses trying to change that information originate from California – one IP address from California State University and a number of IP addresses from T-Mobile. Despite the different IP addresses, I assume it's the same person, as IP addresses on mobile devices are not static and change frequently. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult for me to block that person. I would have to block the entire IP range, which would affect others using T-Mobile. Given the need to block the entire IP range, for now, I will put a notice on the talk page for "List of Line-Up Changes on Verizon FiOS from the 2000s" regarding this issue. If it persists, let me know, and I might have no choice but to block that entire T-Mobile IP address range to prevent the vandalism. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:28, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

I had to revert the vandalism again today. Someone seems to get a kick out of reposting that false information. --Longislandmedia (talk) 23:35, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

I've blocked the particular IP address that made the edit. Like last time, the IP address is registered to California State University, so most likely, it's the same person. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:08, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

And it happened again today.

This time, the vandalism has come from a different IP address (99.109.90.90; AT&T; Los Angeles, CA). I assume it's the same person since all of the vandalism occurs from IP addresses around Los Angeles. 99.109.90.90, however, has made many contributions to this wiki since 2014, so I'm not sure why the person feels the need to insist with posting this false information alongside all their other edits. I have put a notice on their talk page and will block this IP address also, if the vandalism continues. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:52, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Since I last mentioned it, there have been 3 false edits which I have reverted. This page may need a Wikipedia protection where IP addresses can't edit the page to prevent vandalism. --Longislandmedia (talk) 16:20, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
The false information had to be reverted 3 times today, so this is a more deliberate trolling effort.--Longislandmedia (talk) 18:11, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
I have limited the page to be edited by autoconfirmed users only. If you can no longer edit the page, let me know so that I can adjust the settings. I have also posted a final warning for the user. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:21, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Can you unblock the page please now?

If you don't keep re-adding the false information, then, yes. If you agree, let me know and I'll unprotect it. Tvchannellists (talk) 17:16, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

I'll promise I won't add any false info and I will understand this.

I have removed the protection on a trial basis. If there's any more false information added, the protection will go back on. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:58, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

It didn't take long, but now people are posting that Discovery Kids was replaced by Nicktoons even though it's already on channel 254 at that time. So, they are asserting that Nicktoons was on both 254 AND 259 for a period of time.--Longislandmedia (talk) 17:54, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Protection has been reapplied—indefinitely. Further requests for removal of protection will be ignored, unless I'm provided with a good reason otherwise. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:24, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Can you unblock the page now?

Given that you posted more false information on the page after your last request to unblock the page and your promise not to, the page is staying protected, unless you can give me good reason otherwise. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:19, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I won't add false info for this.

That's what you said last time, so how is it any different this time?

I'll add some important info that channels were renamed, removed, and replaced by.

You were one of the ones who posted false information as well. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:11, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

I promise I won't add any false info about Discovery Kids, Boomerang, or Nicktoons on the list. If I do that again, I'll be grounded from the website.

Ok, but this is the last time I'm unprotecting this page. If there's any more false information, this page will be on protection—permanently. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:05, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Apparently, 99.109.90.90 cannot keep a promise because I reverted another posting of false information. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:12, 24 April 2016 (UTC) And then another one on that same listing. --Longislandmedia (talk) 07:04, 25 April 2016 (UTC) If he continues this, he should be permanently blocked.

The page is now permanently on protection. If there are any further reports of vandalism by 99.109.90.90 (and associated IP addresses), he will also receive a permanent ban. Tvchannellists (talk) 15:35, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Verizon FiOS page vandalism

99.109.90.90 screwed up the Channel List for FiOS. He combined the sections of channels (1-99, 100-199, etc) into one giant one, for no reason. This made it much harder to read. He also removed important notes about certain national feeds of RSNs. I reverted the (many) edits, but could you protect the FiOS Channel List page too? Branch (talk) 19:44, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

I've made a note about your comments on his Talk page. If it happens again, I will turn on the page protection. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:35, 1 May 2016 (UTC)
Happening again, can you protect? Thanks! Branch (talk) 01:26, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
I've added the protection to the page now. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

List of Verizon FiOS New York Specific Channels

Can "List of Verizon FiOS New York Specific Channels" be deleted? There is no need for a list region-specific local channels. Especially, if we don't have all the regions. Just the national FiOS Channel list is enough. Branch (talk)

Someone could create the lists for the other regions if they know the other line-ups and is wiling to build them.--Longislandmedia (talk) 02:58, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
According to the site's analytics, there were more than 1000 visits to the page in the past month. Given there seems to be a demand for the information and there's no benefit in removing it, I would lean towards keeping it. It also seems to be fairly well maintained. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:22, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
Don't do LA & Palm Springs-- they're getting transferred to Frontier in 60 days. I can do some, mostly MD/DC. And let's keep it by state, not city. We also don't need region specific line-up changes. Just having the current lineup should be enough. Branch (talk) 21:45, 28 January 2016 (UTC)
The FL & TX systems are also going to Frontier as well in that period which will just leave Verizon with its footprint in the Northeast. The New York lineup only applies to the New York Metropolitan Area since FiOS also has a presence in Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo. The Northern and Central NJ lineups along with Greenwich, CT are similar to New York with minor variations. --Longislandmedia (talk) 09:38, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
This is part of the problem-- it's really complex to have all the locals listed-- and it seems weird to just have NYC. Branch (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
I still think it should be deleted. Realistically, no one has time to make one for all the territories FiOS covers, and it's weird just to have NYC. Very few (if any) other of the providers have them Branch (talk) 23:12, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
To resolve this issue, it is now being put to a vote, as per Wikipedia. If a majority votes for it to be deleted, it will be. Discuss and vote here: Talk:List_of_Verizon_FiOS_New_York_Specific_Channels Tvchannellists (talk) 05:18, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
It's been two weeks and there's only been one vote – keep. As there were no votes for the deletion of the page, the page will be kept. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Just noticed that Branch voted for deletion, which places it at a tie. In which case, I'll keep the vote open for a bit longer to see if there are any other votes that have yet to come in. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:58, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Since LongIslandMedia is the only one other than me who cares, what about a compromise: it stays, albeit archived. Unless/until we get more regional lineups for FiOS, the main FiOS channel lineup won't link to it. Is that ok? Branch (talk) 21:36, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
That's fine by me. I've linked to it in the miscellaneous pages at the bottom of the front page. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:14, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Colors Standardization?

Is there a list of what colors are for what channels? If not, there should be, and colors should be standardized. If there is, where is it, and can it be put on all channel lists so people can more easily see it. Branch (talk) 21:51, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

When I created the pages originally, there used to be a list, but someone decided to delete it. Since then, different people have been using different colours for different things. Feel free to propose/develop a standardised list – then it can be applied to all of the pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:43, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
If I made a standardized list of colors, could it be easily applied? If not, then what's the point? No one has the time to comb through and change everything. Branch (talk) 01:53, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
I suppose you could just apply them to the pages that you're updating. At least, then, those particular pages will have consistencies and keys. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:19, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
But if it's not the same all over, it doesn't seem to solve the problem. Maybe someone will feel like doing this, but that person would need a lot of free time. Branch (talk) 03:57, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
Would people be willing to implant this if I made a list of colors? Branch (talk) 01:25, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
I can't speak for the other editors of the wiki, but you could just put it in and hopefully, others will be consistent with it. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Alright, I'll work on it. Branch (talk) 14:35, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

WYSIWYG Editor

Wikipedia recently took their WYSIWYG editor out of beta. Could we get one on this site? Branch (talk) 01:25, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

I'll look into getting this implemented. There doesn't appear to an easy one-click type way to add it. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
This link may help: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor Branch (talk) 15:36, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
I've had a look at VisualEditor and it requires the Parsoid service to work. As this site is on shared hosting and I don't have direct access to the server, it's not possible for me to get Parsoid running on it. The two options would be either to get the site a dedicated server (which would speed the website up as well, but would increase the website's operating expenses significantly) or to run Parsoid on a different server, which looks very complicated based on the description provided here. Even though I would like to implement a WYSIWYG editor on the website, I don't really see an easy way of doing so – unless someone here can provide advice on an easier way to implement a WYSIWYG editor. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:55, 4 May 2016 (UTC)
I assume you made sure that the shared hosting you use doesn't support this? It looks like it just needs "node.js" running. I understand completely if this can't happen-- but it would be awesome if it could. Branch (talk) 21:51, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
I managed to get it working using a third-party host; however, it was very slow and crashed after just a few minutes due to the complexity of the pages on this wiki. As such, I've turned it back off. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:50, 7 May 2016 (UTC)
That's annoying. I really hope we can find a way to get it to work! Branch (talk) 21:33, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
Probably the only way would be to move the site to VPS hosting with more resources; however, unfortunately, as previously mentioned, that would add a fair bit of recurring expenditure to running the website. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:14, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

More Vandalism

I just reverted another change that a certain IP address had made on the DirecTV channel changes in the 2010's page because he made a change which falsely indicated that DirecTV would directly be moving IFC and removing the fact that it is spending a month on both channels. While this poster will put accurate information in, he has a tendency to make these changes that put false information in, and if he gets called on it he doubles down, a perfect example were all the false September, 2009 Verizon Fios changes that he put in. Maybe it is time to consider a permanent block. --Longislandmedia (talk)

Owing to the continued complaints regarding this contributor, as an initial measure, I have applied a two-week block to his IP address. If there are any further complaints after his block expires, a permanent ban will be applied. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:36, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

I just spotted more IP vandalism from several IP address in the 172.50.30 and 172.50.31 ranges. I checked the Lyngsat Sky Mexico listing since I was auspicious about the Los Angeles station on SKY Mexico and the channels were not listed. Whether this is a different vandal or our friend using another IP address, I thought to bring it to your attention. --Longislandmedia (talk) 20:22, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

I believe I've blocked the 175.50.30 and 172.50.31 ranges by applying a block to 172.56.30.0/23; hopefully, this will address the issue. I notice that there are two more edits to the Sky Mexico page after your rollback from the same IP address – I'm not sure if those additional edits contain false information also. —Tvchannellists (talk) 02:37, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Our friend 99.109.90.90 is making edits to the FiOS Channel Changes pages and not following the convention (putting HD and SD on the same line, for convience). He's undoing a lot of hard work. Protection, please? and maybe consider another ban? Branch (talk) 23:39, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

I've added a note to the Talk page and have added the protection. Since the edits weren't blatant incorrect information, this will be a warning as opposed to a ban. However, if it repeats, or if there is posting of false information, then a ban will be applied. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:26, 28 May 2016 (UTC)

He's now doing those changes on the AT&T U-Verse channel changes pages as well.--Longislandmedia (talk) 07:54, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in case he didn't see the note on the FiOS line-up changes and have posted the note directly on his talk page. If it re-occurs, a 30-day ban, double the previous ban, will be imposed. Additional breaches will result in bans of doubling duration (i.e. 60, 120, 240 days, etc.). Tvchannellists (talk) 08:44, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

i Just reverted some vandalism on the DirecTV page from a different IP address who garbled all the listings for channels 600-799. --Longislandmedia (talk) 03:19, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification and reversion. If there is any further vandalism from this IP address, I'll block it. The IP address appears to originate from Ontario, Canada. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:31, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

More spam

Another Indian human spammer joined. Cable viewer (talk) 21:00, 1 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. A permanent ban has been applied. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:49, 3 July 2016 (UTC)

Canadian line-ups

I just figured you would know since there were notes on the line=ups being out of date since they were still variants of the old Wikipedia pages. The Shaw Direct lineup page has been updated and I have started working on the Bell lineup page. Due to the nature of Bell's services, I had to blow it up and am in the process of rebuilding it in order to update it. Even though they are similar, there are enough differences which will result in the Bell Satellite and Bell Fibe lineups being split to reflect the variations between the two providers. --Longislandmedia (talk) 05:51, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your efforts in updating the Canadian line-ups; it's much appreciated. Feel free to remove the outdated notices once you think they're sufficiently current. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:46, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

I wasn't able to delete it because the icon with the out-of-date note wasn't in the edit field. --Longislandmedia (talk) 18:46, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Longislandmedia. All you need to do is delete the "{{Outdated}}" at the start of the article. I've done this for you. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:24, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Don't remove Viasat_Explorer_Old and Viasat_History_Old tho, remove these instead: Click and Click

P.S to the admin, could you also remove all of the archives (if they exit) of the same files and just wipe 'em like they never exited if it's possble, please? Thanks. Cable viewer (talk) 21:29, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

The files have been deleted. Please note that for those images with file names which are the same as images on Wikimedia Commons, it will still be accessible even though it's deleted as the server automatically pulls it from Wikimedia Commons if it exists there. Additionally, due to the caching employed on this website, you may need to refresh the page to see that the image has been deleted. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:05, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Vandalism - Sky UK and related pages

User at IP address 86.158.168.225 is constantly vandalising the Sky UK and other related pages. Any way of making this more difficult, please?

Thanks for the notification. The IP address has been banned for 1 month. Please advise if there is any additional vandalism and I can implement additional blocks. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:41, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

Even more vandalism

SuperMarioPlayer has been constantly vandalizing the FiOS Channel Lineup page with random text and poems...

Thanks for the notification. A one-month block has been put into place. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:46, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
He came back and did more on the FiOS Channel Changes from 2010. LongIslandMedia undid them but he just doesn't seem to understand what is and isn't supposed to be on this website. Branch (talk) 14:37, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Looks like 99.109.90.90 is back to his old habits. He has been posting on different pages that MTV Hits is changing to Nick Music despite a confirmation that the name change was a false rumor and is not happening. He also blanked the changes in Frontier Fios pages for no reason. The 2010's one should be specific to Indiana, Washington, and Oregon since the California, Florida, and Texas lineups followed Verizon Fios changes until early 2016 when the ownership transferred. Unless he can explain himself, it is time for a permanent banning. --Longislandmedia (talk) 07:56, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the notifications. I've previously applied the two-week and one-month blocks. This time, I have applied the next step up in Mediawiki, which is the three-month block option. The only three higher options are six months, one year and permanent. Subsequent blocks will be applied for those three higher block periods respectively. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:45, 25 July 2016 (UTC)

Another IP vandal (may have been a previous one was vandalizing both the DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse channel lineup pages by putting deliberate false information on both pages. They have been reverted, but it looks like another ban is needed. --Longislandmedia (talk) 07:14, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for that. The ban has been applied. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:09, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

The vandal came back under a different IP address and created more vandalism on the AT&T U-Verse page. Also, Unicorn Fun signed up with the sole purpose of blanking pages and replacing them with infantile expressions. I think both of these fall under the pattern of trolling behavior and may warrant stricter banning standards.--Longislandmedia (talk) 02:20, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks again for the notification. UnicornFun has a permanent ban instated. And for the unregistered vandal, I've tried to block anyone on that entire IP address range from editing permanently. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:08, 1 August 2016 (UTC)
A bit of extra information – I don't think the two are related. UnicornFun is posting from 108.18.124.221, which is a Verizon IP address from Falls Church, VA. The unregistered vandal comes up as being from Reynolds, GA. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:23, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

I believe the unregistered vandal is the one who vandalized the DirecTV and U-Verse pages the previous day since it's the same sort of vandalism. --Longislandmedia (talk) 03:55, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

UnicornFun returned and keeps deleting the main page, plus he deleted once the Royal Cable channel list, between 22:40-23:01 EET. --ScytheChariot (talk) 20:10, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification and the numerous reverts, ScytheChariot. I've applied a permanent block to the account and his IP address. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:30, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Userboxes

Hi tvchannellists, first of all, thank you for creating this amazing website! However, there, of course, has things that can make it any better. Is there anyway that userboxes (the Wikipedia ones) can be added to this website so that we can make our own? Tried, they don't work :/

Thanks in advance.

Cheers. Alex (talk) 13:11, 4 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Alex. I looked into it and it seems quite complex (see link [1]), requiring several dependencies and exports from Wikipedia. I think the effort to get it going outweighs the gain. Tvchannellists (talk) 15:05, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, sorry then! I absolutely agree, never mind...
Sorry for wasting your time. Mediawiki is a clumsy CMS anyways, shame there's no alternative. Alex (talk) 15:10, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
No need to apologise. Where it's not too complex, I try to implement users' request. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:30, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Blockandnuke

BTW, you need to apply this fix in order for blockandnuke to work again: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Topic:Susgnmraj8ccff78#flow-post-suuswdmb6o5zu7k0 Alex (talk) 10:57, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

I've amended the PHP code for BlockandNuke, so it should be back up and running now. I haven't really had to use it recently in any case as the amount of spam accounts being created has dropped a lot compared to what it used to be. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:05, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Policies for blocking of users

I think that at this point, with more than one admin, we should establish standardised blocking procedures. Outright destructive behaviour such as blanking of pages and linking to spam, etc. can be an immediate permanent ban. For lesser offences (e.g. incorrect information, arguments between users, etc.) I think the first offence should be one day, second offence = one month, third offence = one year and then fourth offence = permanent. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:57, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Agreed. Gonna change those two range blocks from infinite to 6 months as for a range block infinite seems too harsh. Alex (talk) 12:58, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
Actually, I think the third offence should be 3 months, 1 year is just too much IMHO. 4th offence, yep permanent block. Also, I think we should draw the line for false information: If someone makes a mistake (like for example wrong frequency of channel, etc.) without realizing it and doing it in good faith, I don't think they should be punished. However, if done with an obvious intent to vandalize, warn first and then 1 day block. Thoughts? Alex (talk) 13:38, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
Sounds alright to me. In relation to incorrect information, what I had in mind when I mentioned that was edits that were with obviously deliberate false information (e.g. users changing TCM to TCM Asia for US cable providers). If it's accidental, I agree, I don't think that warrants blocking. These policies should probably also go on a separate policy page rather than just residing here on the talk page. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:48, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
Sure, the policy should be a separate page, can't make it at the moment though. Also, how can I, for example, see my own IP on this website? Do I need to have additional permissions or am I missing something? Alex (talk) 13:51, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I've added an outline of the block policy to the 'About' page, which can be found at the bottom of every page. Perhaps when we warn users, we could link to the policy – or even have a standard warning template like Wikipedia.Tvchannellists (talk) 14:20, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I've never figured out a direct way to do this. I usually go into phpmyadmin and in the recent changes table, it has the IP addresses of the editors as a column. However, now that Block and Nuke is back, what you can do is select only the person who you want to see the IP of on the Block and Nuke page, press block user, and then on the page where it asks you to confirm the block, it shows the person's IP address. As long as you don't press "Block and Nuke" on this second page, there'll be no action taken on the user. I've whitelisted you though, so you won't appear on Block and Nuke. I can take you off it, if you want to see your IP address. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:57, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I think the direct way to do it is to install the checkuser addon and to give the person you want to view the IPs checkuser permissions. But IMHO, that isn't needed, the blockandnuke solution is good enough, was just curious, thanks!
I tried installing checkuser previously, but it wouldn't work properly on this site for some reason. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:20, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
Outdated PHP, perhaps? If you're lucky, your host may support switching to newer PHP versions.
Just spotted some undetected spammer advertising their own UK shopping channels. Looks like we're also going to have to add paid advertising with no links on the list... Just spotted now that the same IP also vandalized the Shop at Bid on wikipedia to spam the same shopping channel too, so it's definitely not someone who will contribute to the site.

Sleeper spammer issue

Spam accounts are still an active issue, but they aren't posting. They're called "sleeper spammers". I see there's a bunch of them here. Gonna ban them and their ranges (they most probably use private networks/proxies).

Thanks for doing that, Alex. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:31, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
I think we need to get some more protection with this spam issue, there are surely more sleeper spammers but these are the only ones I was able to verify. Alex (talk) 08:16, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
What would you suggest? The implementation of the new ReCaptcha brought it down from dozens of active spam account per day to just a few sleeper spam accounts per month. In the past, I've also applied permanent blocks to VPS/hosting/VPN/co-location IP ranges whenever a spammer's signed up from one of them. I'm not sure why they're sleeping in any case; in the past, they would start spamming as soon as the account was created. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:29, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
Well I first think the site should update mediawiki to 1.27.0, then start with the anti-spam solutions. No problem BTW, it's easy hammering them really. If you're not able to update to 1.27.0, update to 1.26.3, I think that should work. Alex (talk) 08:32, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
The installation and update of Mediawiki on TV Channel Lists is managed by Installatron through cPanel and it doesn't appear that Installatron has incorporated Mediawiki 1.27 or 1.26.3 into their system yet, unfortunately, so I'm not able to update it as of yet. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:48, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgApplyIpBlocksToXff Set this to true and try this also: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam#Honeypots.2C_DNS_BL.27s_and_HTTP_BL.27s
Thanks. Both measures have been implemented. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:09, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Let's see if there are any spammers registering, if yes we should maybe up the protection even more... Alex (talk) 10:14, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Suggestions

Thanks. Just one question: Can we also add Oversight permissions (like on Wikipedia) to the administrator group? https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights#Removing_predefined_groups set suppressrevision, viewsuppressed, deletelogentry and deleterevision to sysop. BTW, to be honest, I think the Commons pulling should be disabled if it's possible. IMHO, it causes nothing but an annoyance, everyone uploads their own files here anyways. Alex (talk) 05:20, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Commons pulling and permissions changes have been done. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:25, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. How did you disable the commons pulling? Couldn't find anywhere how to... Alex (talk) 13:29, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
In localsettings.php, "$wgUseInstantCommons = false;" Tvchannellists (talk) 13:33, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Additional Usergroups

I think we should have a new usergroup titled "Rollback", the usergroup will have the same permissions as the autoconfirmed usergroup except the rollback permissions which will there. I think Scy and Longislandmedia would be great candidates for something like that. Alex (talk) 22:03, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

I've added ScytheChariot and Longislandmedia into a new group with rollback privileges. I'll advise them of their new permissions via their talk pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:56, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Speed up

Can you check this out? http://techwelkin.com/slow-mediawiki-optimize-to-enhance-performance-part-1 Already did the MediaWiki:Aboutsite and MediaWiki:Pagetitle Alex (talk) 13:00, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

I've applied most of those optimisations to the site. The main exception being caching, which just caused the site not to load at all. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:34, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, noticable speed-up. Just for insight, did you manage to do the Apatche optimizations too? I don't really know what's up with the caching on this website, really acts weird... https://gtmetrix.com/reports/tvchannellists.com/CXXJK02z Those are pretty great results. Alex (talk) 13:37, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
I haven't done the Apache tweaks. The hosting is via cPanel; I don't know if I can make adjustments to the web server. As for the caching, it's run through CloudFlare, to alleviate bandwidth demands from the loading of images. The consequence is that images don't necessarily update quickly when they're changed. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:40, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Eh, doesn't really matter, the speed up improvement is good enough. What are your CF settings? You can email them to me if you want. Alex (talk) 13:44, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Just the default settings, with the caching level set on standard. Looking at the analytics, it only saved 76MB of bandwidth in the past month out of 3GB, so I'm not sure if it's even worth having on. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:48, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Auto-minify: All checked, RocketLoader: Automatic, browser cache expiration: 5 days, turn on IPv6 (doesn't matter if you host supports it or not), protection level: High, then purge all cache to apply. Alex (talk) 13:55, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
All done. I also recently applied Gzip compression to the MySQL database. It was almost at 1GB, but now it's closer to 200MB. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:32, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Can you try to disable Rocket Script and then purge the cache again? I think it does more bad then good on this website. Alex (talk) 14:41, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
This has been done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:54, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, fixed the infinite loading issue. For me, the site is extremely fast now. Alex (talk) 14:55, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Administrator "Alex"

I have a problem with Alex, the new volunteer. In Romania=>Digital=>Telekom, Alex deleted my work for about 60-70 channels. I got angry, because I don't like vandalism. So, I clicked the "undo" button and wrote at "summary" (in romanian): if you delete this once more, I will report you!

After this, I got a message in "user talk" which said that he was the admin (being very proud of this). Also, he said that i started a conflict and that I am hysterical and overreacting (which is not true).

I don't understand why you made this guy a volunteer, because he's new, and he doesn't meet the requirements .

The best replacement is ScytheChariot. He is on this page for so many time, he is also very good and careful with details.

Thanks for reading and I hope this solves soon.

You WERE being hysterical because instead of civilly talking to me you added THAT as the edit summary (along with all the three exclamations marks. Ask any staff member on Wikipedia or any other wikia, they will tell you that is considered rude and hysterical). I already explained that I didn't vandalize your article, but that it was a misunderstanding and apologized 3 times in that message. Also, where was I "very proud" that I was an admin here in that message? I just noted that I was an admin because you thought that I was a regular user. I was very civil and calm in my message, even complimenting you, never did I boost about my power... You want me removed as soon as possible because of a simple misunderstanding that I did not even do on purpose and apologized for and also explained why I did that?
This has already been resolved, but you just came here to attempt to remove me because I made a mistake that I apologized for... Start understanding that everyone makes mistakes (including admins and Scy) and they should not be punished for them. I already said all of this this in my message on your talk page, hopefully you will understand now. Have a nice day and again, I apologize if I offended you personally. Alex (talk) 09:10, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
As Alex noted, he made a mistake. I understand that you were upset, but he has apologised and I believe that the issues with the page have since been resolved. Continuing on this topic this isn't going to change what happened so let's just try to move on amicably and civilly. No moderation action will be taken against either member in this instance. However, as noted, please communicate in English on this website so that everyone can understand. If ScytheChariot wants to volunteer to be an admin also, I would be happy to add him.
In relation to Alex not meeting requirements, Alex has been quite proactive in ridding the site of spam accounts, improving the site's speed as well as removing duplicated files, amongst other things, so I think that Alex has helped to improve the site.
Further, as per the site's policies, accidental errors are not a reprimandable action. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:13, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the nice words tvchannelists and for stepping into my defense, means a lot to me. I'll go ahead and mark this as solved now.
I do agree that Queron should currently not be taken action against, however, if he makes another one of these invalid reports with bigger holes then Swiss cheese towards anyone or uses the edit summary like those two times again, I do think at least an additional warning will be required. Queron, yes, that is starting a conflict, if you think your edit was unjustifiably removed you should 1) always assume good faith 2) Civilly talk it out with the person who removed your edit instead of disregarding everything as just vandalism and threatening to report them. Also, the fact that I apologized, acknowledged the mistake and explained on your talk page everything makes this report even more useless.
And yes, if Scy wants to be an admin I would happily accept him. -Alex (talk) 10:30, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Additional Admins

We need more admins and checkusers to prevent stuff like this from happening. Also, UnicornFun is a "serial" spammer, as you can see he also spammed Wikipedia, so yeah that's pretty much it. Alex (talk) 08:35, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

If anyone wants to volunteer to have additional permissions, let me know and I'll consider it. Acceptance is not guaranteed and will be based on your behaviour on this site. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:02, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I'd like to sign up as a volunteer at least temporary. Alex (talk) 10:14, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
I've added you to the administrator group. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:57, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
On a second thought, I think I want to volunteer too and accept Alex's proposal so become an admin, temporarily at least. ScytheChariot (talk) 10:26, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for volunteering, ScytheChariot; I've promoted you to admin. In relation to your other commitments, don't feel as though there's any minimum amount of time you need to spend on administering for TV Channel Lists. I'm happy for you to be a part-time admin and give as little or as much time to the site as you wish. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:45, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Thank you too! These days I'll try to reupload most of the logos at the same quality (or even higher resolutions), but compressed without losing quality in order to save some space. ScytheChariot (talk) 14:48, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Bug

Even though you've disabled the Commons pulling, it still seems to cache images like they're still being pulled... (for example the thumbnail on this file) Anything else that can be done or is this a non-fixable bug?

I wouldn't know, to be honest. Sorry. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:16, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Demotion

I request demotion because I think there are way better candidates then me as an administrator. I may be good with preventing spam and all that, but as a whole, I feel there could be other contributors way more worthy of adminship. I'd like to stay on the blockandnuke whitelist though (you should also put yourself on the whitelist for privacy reasons). -Alex (talk) 14:52, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Why would you retire? You did a great job for the site in the past week! ScytheChariot (talk) 15:32, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Alex. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but like ScytheChariot, I think that you've been doing a good job. And with you as an admin, that doesn't preclude anyone else from becoming an admin as well, if they wanted to. If it's because of the issue with Queron, I wouldn't let something like that get you down. Moderators and administrators are always bound to upset someone sooner or later because of the very nature of the role and the fact that not everyone can always get their way. If you want to continue on, you have my full support. Please let me know your final decision by replying to this post and I'll put into effect the demotion if that is what you decide. In any case, thanks for helping out with the admin this past week. As for the whitelist, sure, you'll stay on it. I'm on it also, but for some reason, my username still appears on Block and Nuke. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:15, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
As Alex hasn't been back to the site for several days, I will go ahead and process his demotion as per his request. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:46, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

3 Things

1) I can't edit or add to existing topics on this page... Bug? **Update (1:36 UTC): this appears to now be fixed**

2) I would like to "volunteer as tribute" for adminship. and I would like to nominate LongIslandMedia-- they've been awesome helping with the FiOS pages.

3) Can 4~ sigs include the time in the time zone that the user specified? And can we also get the option for non-24hr time (AM/PM)?

Thanks! Branch (talk) 01:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Branch,
1) What error did you get when you were trying to edit? I haven't changed anything.
2) Sure, I'll promote you to the admin group. I'm happy for LongIslandMedia to be an admin. If he decides to volunteer, I'll add him too.
3) As for the signatures, that's a function of MediaWiki; I don't know if it can be changed. If you type three (i.e. ~~~) tildes instead of four, it won't include the time stamp and you can write the time in manually. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:33, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
I didn't get an error, I'd just type a letter, and then that letter would disappear. It's working now though, so I guess it could have been a glitch on my end. Makes sense about the signatures, but could we still get the option to do AM/PM time for edits etc? If it's too hard, then don't worry about it. Also, could we get a list of all users with special permissions (rollback, admins)? And I'd be happy to help bring http://tvchannellists.com/testpatterns/ onto MediaWiki. Finally: other than rollback and temp/perm banning, do admins have any other special permissions? Branch (talk) 10:52, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Not sure about that not being able to type issue. I would think it's probably a local issue.
As for the AM/PM time issue, I don't know how I can change it – Wikipedia has it same (24-hour time).
As for the list of special users and their rights, go to this page Special:ListGroupRights. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:46, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Bug happened again. Closing and reopening my browser (Chrome on OS X) fixed the issue, so it must be local.

Echo

This would be awesome. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Echo that way all admins could get a notification about a new post here, and everyone could get other great notifications. we could also get a template to call out a user (such as reply to, or anything else) so it'll ping them when they're mentioned. You could also send out site-wide or user-specific messages.

If you haven't noticed it already in the top-right of the page, I've installed Echo on to the site. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:02, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Awesome. It looks like sitewide notifications are currently in development, but once they're released it'll be super helpful. Currently I can ping people by linking to their user page, like this. ScytheChariot. Branch (talk) 02:12, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Sidebar and Footer

The Aussie TV History and other sidebar links seem kind of unneeded... Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

I have removed the sidebar links, as per your suggestion. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
If you noticed, I made a few improvements to the About page, one of which was changing the name slightly. If you could update the footer, I'd appreciate it. Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC) Also in the footer, can you remove the Privacy Policy link and replace the disclaimers link to here? I'll finish writing them today, and move the banning policy to there. http://www.tvchannellists.com/General_Disclaimers_%26_Policies Thanks as always. Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Here's instructions for the footer: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Footer. Also, I made a page called Site News & Updates which I will fill in today with past updates, etc. Feel free to add it to the sidebar. While doing so, I'd recommend reordering the sidebar:
Main Page, About Us, Site News & Updates, General Disclaimers & Policies
and removing random page (not useful), list of all pages (the list is on the homepage), and recent changes (it's already in the tools section).
That way you could honestly just kill off the footer. Branch (talk) 12:05, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I've amended the sidebar as per your suggestions; however, I've kept Recent Changes, as I use it as a shortcut to quickly get to the Recent Changes page. I've also removed the footer links, as per your suggestion. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:59, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good. Could Recent changes go in the "tools" section, though?
Doesn't look like it's easy: The toolbox, which appears under the search bar, is a dynamic element and cannot be easily customized without the use of skinning extensions (otherwise it requires programming in PHP.) If it bothers you, I can just remove it and get to it through the Special Pages page Tvchannellists (talk) 13:56, 13 August 2016 (UTC).
What if it was named "Recent Page Changes" to be more clear? Branch (talk) 17:20, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Done. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:39, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Updated page name of disclaimers and policies to match sidebar. Can you update the link? Branch (talk) 01:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Done. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:17, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Site Updates Section

Can I make a dedicated page to site updates, so they don't get lost here? Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Sure, having a site updates section sounds good. Maybe a link to it can be placed in the sidebar. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I'll make a site updates section today and link here. Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I've added a few recent things that came to mind. Feel free to add whatever else you can think of. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:22, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

MediaWiki Update

It's time to update the site to MediaWiki 1.27! Looks like there are some new features, but I haven't had a chance to look too deeply. Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

The MediaWiki installation is managed by Installatron, which doesn't have anything newer than 1.26.2 yet, unfortunately. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I reached out to Installatron about 1.27. I'll let you know when they respond. Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for getting in touch with Installatron; it would be good to be able to update the site to the latest version of MediaWiki. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:40, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
They replied, and said it's on their radar, but they don't have an ETA. I asked for them to keep me posted. Branch (talk) 13:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for that, Branch. Hopefully, it's sooner rather than later. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:38, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Americanisation of Spellings

Branch, I noticed you've been Americanising the spellings on the website (e.g. offence [UK] => offense [US]; behaviour [UK] => behavior [US]). Were you wanting to standardise the website to American English? Tvchannellists (talk) 11:40, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

I did change the about page to American English. I'm happy to revert back, though, if you don't like it. Branch (talk) 12:05, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Either's fine with me – just wondering. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:59, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Licence of Posted Content

Since we were doing the policies, I was wondering if we need to establish what licence material posted on this website should be. Assumedly, this would be some sort of free licence as I don't believe channel listings would be copyrightable in the first place. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:11, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Well, not only that, but the listings aren't ours to copyright, so I don't know if we're even allowed to put a license on them? I mean it's not like we can say "you can't repost this".Branch (talk) 13:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I've added a section on the policies page stating that the content on this website doesn't meet the threshold of originality for copyright protection – both in terms of our users taking information from elsewhere and for others wanting to copy our information. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Check User

The Check User extension has been installed and access has been granted to admins. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:26, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Contact Us

I've added a contact us link to the sidebar. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:39, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Tag for improvement

Is there a way to use something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cleanup to show when a lineup may need improvements? Then make a link that autogenerates the pages with that tag so users can easily help with pages that need help? Also, I've been going through and deleting pages with no content. Hopefully the reduced number of "bad" pages will result in the "good" pages being easier to find, and also an overall leaner site. Branch (talk) 18:38, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

I've added a cleanup category and template. Add the following code to the top of the source of any page you want to be tagged as cleanup required:
      [[Category: Cleanup]]
      {{Template:Cleanup}}
If you're looking at the source of this talk page, don't actually add the 'nowiki' code. That's just there to prevent Mediawiki from actually parsing that code and applying the cleanup template for this talk page.
The list of pages with the cleanup template applied can then be found here: Category: Cleanup Tvchannellists (talk) 23:35, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Awesome! Can a link go in the sidebar for it, perhaps titled "Pages Needing Improvement"? Scythechariot, just a heads up about this. I'm gonna start tagging, can you help?
I've added the link to the sidebar. I also adjusted your response a bit as the 'Reply to' template doesn't seem to exist on here. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:47, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Unable to edit bug

I can't edit or add to existing topics on this page... Bug? **Update (1:36 UTC): this appears to now be fixed** Branch (talk) 01:18, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

Not sure about that not being able to type issue. I would think it's probably a local issue. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:46, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I've narrowed it down... I can only edit this page when I'm in Chrome Incognito mode, which is odd. Branch (talk) 13:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Can't really help you out. I tried editing in Chrome Incognito mode just now and didn't have any issues. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:51, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
No, I believe you misunderstood-- I can only edit when I'm using Incognito. Otherwise it's buggy.Branch (talk) 17:18, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
My bad. I edit the site in Chrome without Incognito mode and I've never encountered that issue. Maybe there's a Chrome extension interfering with the site? I'm not sure. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:37, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
It was a Chrome Extension, which I disabled. Weird thing was it was just this page, no other page. Branch (talk) 23:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

HTTPS & IPv6 & Logo Issues

I don't know how easy it is to implant either, but HTTPS certs are now free through https://letsencrypt.org/. I know we don't store anything confidential, but if it's free, we may as well. It makes the site look more professional, in my opinion. Also, IPv6? Branch (talk) 17:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

I turned on IPv6 on Cloudflare already; I'll look into getting the HTTPS certificate implemented. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:38, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good about HTTPS. Can IPv6 get implanted on the main site, though? Branch (talk) 23:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm not really sure how to go about this. I see an option for it in cPanel. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:35, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Quick google search returned some instructions, but idk how helpful they are, as I've never used cPanel. Branch (talk) 02:57, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
The website's host has confirmed that IPv6 is not available for the hosting plan the site is on; an upgrade (i.e. more money) would be required to get IPv6. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Regarding SSL, the process to set it up looks complicated, so I'll do it when I'm on my home desktop PC. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:03, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
SSL is now active, though apparently, I need to renew it every 90 days. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Awesome. All that needs to be done is either kill off http, or at least have it redirect to https.Branch (talk) 12:39, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm reluctant to force a redirect to HTTPS given the 90-day manual SSL renewal issue, since, if for some reason, I can't do the renewal, the site will give errors. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:44, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Update: I've enabled the force redirect for now. We'll see how the renewal goes. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:51, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
The SSL seems to be causing some issues with loading the site logo – it is under investigation. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:34, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Google Chrome logs reveal this may be an issue with the fact it's trying to load non-HTTP content, which it doesn't like on an HTTPS page. From the logs: About_TV_Channel_Lists:1 Mixed Content: The page at 'https://www.tvchannellists.com' was loaded over HTTPS, but requested an insecure image 'http://voommaps.com/'. This content should also be served over HTTPS. Branch (talk) 13:41, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I couldn't get it to load properly on HTTPS, so I've moved it to an HTTP address on another site and it seems to work now. Not really sure how to resolve the issue. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Loads fine for me here: https://www.voommaps.com/tvcl/logo.png. Could it just be hosted on this site? Branch (talk) 13:48, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, for some reason when it's in HTTPS on the TVCL server, it won't load. On the other site, it works fine even in HTTPS. I can't figure it out, so I'm just going to leave it on the other site. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:52, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
It says it's still trying to load something on the edit page from VoomMaps that's insecure. Not sure what. Branch (talk) 13:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I've looked at the page source and there are no non-https references to voommaps.com, so I don't know what's triggering it. Looking at Chrome's diagnostics, it appears that by requesting the image in HTTPS, it's also querying the server in HTTP. I don't think it's a major issue, so I'm just going to leave it for now, unless you can figure out a solution. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:23, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

What about hosting it on CloudFlare (if that's an option?) It may also be something with that Powered by MediaWiki logo at the bottom? When you tried hosting it on this site, did you upload it like a normal file? Branch (talk) 15:05, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

I don't think CloudFlare hosts; it just mirrors your site on their CDN. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

The logo is once again not loading. Did you try just uploading the file to the user-facing end of the site, and linking to it that way?

I'll give that a go. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
or just use an image hosting site that forces SSL. that may fix it. VoomMaps doesn't even appear to be an image hosting site. Branch (talk) 01:22, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Seems to be working again now for some reason. I'll just let it be until it breaks. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:49, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

In case it's the powered by mediawiki logo that's causing the issue, you can remove that here: /public_html/your-mediawiki-folder/skins/common/commonContent.css and add #footer-poweredbyico { display: none; } Branch (talk) 16:27, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

I've done this now. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
still there. maybe my instructions were bad, I copied them from another site. Branch (talk) 01:10, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I've managed to disable this through the localsettings.php file. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:49, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

It also appears the CloudFlare offers SSL for the whole site for free, so maybe that would make it work better? IDK. Branch (talk) 01:01, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

The SSL on CloudFlare was already enabled before I tried doing things with the Let's Encrypt site. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

The insecure resources issue seems to be gone now also. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:07, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

The update seems to have broken the site logo again. I will look into it. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:04, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Site is so much faster now! Looks like it's still trying to check VoomMaps for the logo. Does the new host support IPv6? Branch (talk) 10:11, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Yes, but only their very high-end plans. The site should be accessible via IPv6 through CloudFlare in any case though. No idea about voommaps.com; I can't find any reference to it in the source code. Chrome is also saying now that the site's resources are all secure. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:22, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
I can't upload any images, I think that's why the logo isn't working. Here's what I get when I try to click on a file: Home/netzplan/public html/tvchannellists.com/images/www.voommaps.com Page doesn't exist. Branch (talk) 10:27, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Yes, all images seem to be broken at the moment. I'm trying to figure it out. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:28, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
OK, it's all good now. It was an issue with the .htaccess file.Tvchannellists (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Privacy Policy

The privacy policy and disclaimer links in the footer are blank. That should probably be fixed. Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Not sure what to put in the disclaimer/privacy policy; you can fill them in if you'd like and then it'll be the site policy's henceforth. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I can definitely write them, I just need to know what if any information is collected about the user (from ads or anything else). Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
The site uses Google AdSense for advertising and this page seems to explain what it collects. As for what TV Channel Lists collects, it would collect any information you contribute to the site plus the usual things that web servers collect – i.e. IP addresses and browser information. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:40, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Almost forgot – Google Analytics is on the website as well: link (refer to section 7). Tvchannellists (talk) 13:27, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
To save you the effort, I've used a generator and have customised it as per TV Channel Lists functions. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:57, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Awesome. I edited it a bit more for spelling and clarity, and removed some sections that are redundant or don't apply. Feel free to revise more. Branch (talk) 14:01, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Standardization

I'm gonna work on color standardization. Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Colour standardisation would be good; listing standardisation might be a bit more tricky, with varying requirements for different countries' listings (e.g. regioning information, multi-lingual stations, etc.). For example, the List of Channels on Sky is much more complex than most other listings. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Scythechariot and I are gonna work on this. Branch (talk) 17:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Station Logos

One thing I noticed: some of the channel lineups include channel logos. This is really unneeded, and would probably allow the site to run a lot faster if we removed them. That way we could also develop a standardized way for not only colors but also how channels are listed. Branch (talk) 02:21, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Several users, including the other admin ScytheChariot, spend a lot of time uploading logos, so I don't think getting rid of them would go down so well. The logos should be cached by the CloudFlare CDN in any case, instead of being pulled directly off the server each time. Perhaps a vote should be done on the channel logos? Tvchannellists (talk) 09:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I'll ask Scy about channel logos. Branch (talk) 10:15, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Actually, I've received positive feedback from Romanian viewers / readers for the logos. I don't mind a vote, though. ScytheChariot (talk) 11:49, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, sounds good. Perhaps we can get them on more channel lineups, then. Branch (talk) 17:58, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Standard Duration for Archiving of Resolved Issues

I think we should establish a standard period of time before resolved issues get archived. One week perhaps? Tvchannellists (talk) 13:09, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Sounds good to me! Branch (talk) 13:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
I know we said one week to archive posts, but given how many topics there have been over the past few days as a result of the admin team changes, I'm thinking we should make an exception and archive things that have been resolved. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:53, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I concur, honestly, I think anything can be archived immediately upon resolving so long as applicable information has been put on site news. Branch (talk) 02:59, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Adding Listings to Main Page

Hi Branch. Since you locked the main page to admins only, should we establish a procedure for users wanting to add a new line-up to the front page? For now, I've added a note on the front page telling users to contact us on this talk page if they want something added. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:32, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Yes, that sounds good. I did that only because there are a lot of pages on the wiki where users made the line up page but just left it as "coming soon" or "under construction" which isn't good. Those are the pages I'm trying to delete. Branch (talk) 12:39, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I agree with that. I had previously made a note to add links to the main page only when there is content to avoid making the front page excessively long and filled with empty pages; however, some users continued to make the empty links. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:49, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Sporadic Server Load Issues

Every now and again, CPU, I/O and memory spikes to 100% on the server. I've been SSHing into the server trying to figure out what is going on, but all I can ascertain is that the PHP process is responsible. It usually happens for a few hours once a week. I assume it's some sort of clean-up or maintenance script, but I can't figure out what it is exactly. This happened a few minutes ago, causing the site's downtime. It's annoying, but I'm not sure what to do to rectify it. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:55, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

I'm getting loading issues since around 22:15-22:30 EET... :( Very hard to edit something and even if I manage to edit an article, it's updating very hard. ScytheChariot (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
Loading is now working for me (it wasn't before), but logos are missing again and it's still not full HTTPS (see my comment in the HTTPS section). Branch (talk) 22:28, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I can see that the issues are still coming and going – I'm looking into potentially upgrading servers again to cope with the server load from the site. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:04, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Would it be time to maybe finally move off of shared hosting? *cough cough WYSIWYG editor* ;) Branch (talk) 01:09, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
That would be the ideal outcome, but I believe that the ongoing cost of a VPS can be significantly higher. I'll report back after investigating the options. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:14, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I've purchased a more expensive hosting package from another host with more resources. They tell me that node.js will be able to run all the time, meaning that we would be able to have the WYSIWYG editor. However, this means that the site will have to be transferred across. They've given a 72-hour timeframe, so edits made between the time when they duplicate the site on to the new host and when the DNS is switched over will be lost. I would advise either holding off a bit or saving your edits locally as well. I will try to recover the edits that are lost during the transition period, but no guarantees. It would be nice if some of the cost could be recuperated through donations, but I'm not expecting there'd be much, if anything at all. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:26, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

PayPal

Maybe add a donation button (Paypal?). It won't get a lot probably, but if it gets even one donation, it's worth it. If you set-up the back-end, I'm happy to look into the best places to put it.Branch (talk) 01:39, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Seems like PayPal require you to be a not-for-profit organisation to have a donate button and furthermore, you need a Premier or Business PayPal account to withdraw the funds. I'll have to investigate further. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:55, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I've seen for profit sites do it. I too will investigate. Branch (talk) 03:00, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I'd switch to this, and up it to $10 (if they're gonna donate, they'll probably be willing to go $10). People trust Paypal more, IMO. http://paypal.github.io/JavaScriptButtons/ once it's implanted, get the correct logo for it here: https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/logos-buttons (for some reason their button maker still uses their old logo). Also, I put a notice about edits on the main page. Branch (talk) 11:54, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I've used the PayPal button with PayPal logo now. I'm not sure if it's actually working properly though. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:48, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Honestly, I'd just switch it over from donate to buy, so you don't have to worry about it, and then use this image: <img src="://www.paypalobjects.com/webstatic/en_US/i/buttons/cc-badges-ppmcvdam.png" alt="Buy now with PayPal" /> Branch (talk) 09:24, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

More Extensions

I'll keep this topic updated as I find cool extensions and add-ons for us.

I've added WikiEditor. Its documentation states that you may need to clear your cache if it doesn't show up. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:33, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
  • RefreshSpecial
This is done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:49, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

  • Comments in Local Time
Sorry, I was still working on it. Should be fixed now. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:45, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Not working, time is not correctly showing AM/PM as its code dictates. Branch (talk) 13:23, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
The migration broke it. Fixed now. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:37, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
It seems the default timezone has been changed to EDT. It was UTC before. Aetnla (talk) 17:13, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
The Timezone should be whatever your computer is set to.Branch (talk) 17:32, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
My computer isn't set to EDT timezone yet the page modified timestamps are all in EDT when logged out. And my comments I now post are showing up with EDT time regardless. They were showing with my local time before (UTC+1). Aetnla (talk) 17:48, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
I think I've set it back to UTC now. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:37, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, and now Comments_In_Local_Time is working again as I see it in AM/PM 12hr. Branch (talk) 01:08, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Wanted Pages

We need to clean up the Wanted Pages list. Those TV Channels should link to their Wikipedia Page, not a TVCL page. Branch (talk) 10:37, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Where is the 'Wanted Pages' list? Tvchannellists (talk) 10:45, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Special Pages, under Maintenance reports. Branch (talk) 10:46, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Looks like there's quite a lot to do. My time is kind of tight at the moment, but if/when I do have some spare time, I'll try to help out. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:51, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
ScytheChariot can you help as well? I'll work too. Those links just need to be switched to wikipedia links. Branch (talk) 11:08, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Finished most of them! Now there are less than one hundred that need to be solved, most of them are templates and lists with zero information. ScytheChariot (talk) 13:55, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Wow, you're good. I'll take care of the templates, etc when I get the chance. Right now I'm focusing on cleaning up the homepage (you only get one first impression!) by removing links for & deleting pages with no content. Thanks! Branch (talk) 01:54, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
On a similar note, there are/were quite a few internal links that were coded in as external links. I've gone through and changed the ones I found – there may still be others. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Home Page

I've made it through Indonesia on the home page, removing no content links, and applying Cleanup tags as needed. 2 Questions: Do we need the UK and Ireland Master lists? And why does Australia get Radio listings? This isn't RadioChannelLists.com... Branch (talk) 11:43, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

I'd suggest removing the third column from the homepage and everything from it can go to a secondary contents page, linked to at the bottom of the main page labelled as something like 'Other pages on this Wiki'. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:44, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Well ideally channel changes can just be linked from their respective pages. I just don't know what to do about those master lists and radio list. Branch (talk) 12:53, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
I agree with you regarding the channel changes pages; they can just be removed from the front page and linked to at the bottom of their respective articles. The other pages can use the solution I suggested in my previous comment. A single link at the bottom of the front page to 'Other pages on this Wiki' and they can be listed on that secondary contents page. Then we can remove that third column. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:02, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
That sounds good. The only question I have is, do we need those extra pages? Esp. the radio? Branch (talk) 13:28, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
In regards to the UK master pages, I'm reluctant to remove pages that have content that people have spent time putting together and that people visit because the deletion of such pages was the whole reason this website exists in the first place. Wikipedia users decided that channel lists weren't relevant and shouldn't be on Wikipedia and they were all deleted. If we delete pages with content, I feel like we're just repeating what Wikipedia did. As for the radio page, I would be fine for there not to be any link or reference to it at all on TVCL. It's just on here because there was nowhere else to put it and it's not worth setting up a whole Mediawiki for just one page. It's linked to externally from other sites so it can stay there without being visible on TVCL. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:18, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I guess that's fair. How about we link to the UK master list at the bottom of each uk lineup (same for ireland). That way people interested can still find the easily, but everyone doesn't need them on the home page? Also there's so little in the second column that we could combine into one "Service" column and make "free to view" a bolded header where applicable. And then since we'll have a lot more room in the first column, we could even pop in a nice looking thumbnail of the country's flag. Branch (talk) 15:00, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
That sounds good to me. Perhaps we can have a country box at the bottom with links to other pages for that country? Something like Wikipedia does ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Europe_topic example). Not sure how hard they are to do. Your suggestion about the main page sounds good to me. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:55, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
I like the idea of a country box but I've never done one. I'm happy to learn, but I think we should put it on the back burner until we fix the no content pages, broken links, etc. I'm continuing to work my way down the homepage. Branch (talk) 02:18, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Sure, it was just an idea – no urgency. I've uploaded flags for all the countries in preparation for including them on the homepage. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:48, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
I've gone through and added the flags to the front page. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:07, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Awesome. I'm wrapping up adding bolded headers, etc. It's looking so much better, and the site is sooo quick now. Branch (talk) 13:59, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
On the note about deleting pages, I'm fine with deleting pages for specific channels, as those pages exist on Wikipedia. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:07, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Finished Home Page columns, etc. We can revise as necessary (columns for each type of service?) Branch (talk) 02:54, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your work on this, Branch. The home page is looking good. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:07, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Server Migration Complete & Parsoid Troubleshooting

TV Channel Lists has completed its move over to its new host with more bandwidth and more resources. Hopefully, the site should run faster now. Please let me know if you encounter any issues. I will try to set up the WYSIWYG editor tomorrow, if time permits. I've disabled misermode to see how well the new server copes. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:28, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Another side-benefit of the new server – it uses Softaculous instead of Installatron, which supports Mediawiki 1.27. Thus, I've been able to update the site to Mediawiki 1.27. Are there any new features I can implement now that 1.27 is installed? Tvchannellists (talk) 09:53, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Awesome. Site is all Green-Padlocked and Fast. Very nice. I'll look into 1.27 features. I'm trying to locate a plain-english version of their release notes (I can only find super-technical ones) Branch (talk) 10:32, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
I've been quite limited in time lately, so I haven't been able to investigate everything that's been raised regarding the site. The server upgrade investigations and subsequent migration took a fair bit of what time I did have. I've tried looking at the HTTPS redirection issue and I've been playing around with it but haven't been able to get it working right because of how the server is configured. I've also been trying to get Parsoid installed on the server but it's quite complicated and I haven't managed to get it working. At this stage, I'm not sure if I will be able to get it to work. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:04, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Does this help? https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Parsoid/Troubleshooting Branch (talk) 15:01, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Realistically is this going to happen anytime soon? Branch (talk) 01:40, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Hi Branch. I just managed to get the first part of it working. I have installed node.js via SSH and tested it to be working. I'll try to progress further later tonight. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:23, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
I managed to install Parsoid and I can start the service in an SSH instance, but I can't figure out how to keep it running when I close it. Additionally, the service can be accessed via localhost but not externally. Anyone here good with cPanel? Tvchannellists (talk) 11:32, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
OK, it seems to be working now. I would recommend against using it on pages that are complex or have several station logos as you might get an error (you can use "Edit Source" instead of "Edit". It seems to be very resource-intensive, pushing the CPU to 100% and using 1GB+ of RAM. Note: It doesn't work on talk pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:54, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Paypal button looks nice! But I'd switch both of them to <img src="https://www.paypalobjects.com/webstatic/en_US/i/buttons/cc-badges-ppmcvdam.png" alt="Buy now with PayPal" /> so that people know they can also pay with credit card (through Paypal). Also, on the Paypal checkout page, "[email protected]" should be switched to the site's logo, so it looks more professional. Finally: can you put it on the about page? I cannot put it anywhere without it's code. Branch (talk) 10:16, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

The one you linked to was too big, so I picked another one with the logos that fits. Haven't figured out how to customise the payment page yet though. I'll leave it to another time as it's 1 AM here now. I need to figure out how to get code on to the About page also. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:58, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
If you can figure out how to get it into an editable page, I'll work with the logo, get a nice looking one that fits the sidebar, and you can just pop it back in. Branch (talk) 12:10, 16 August 2016 (EDT)
Looks like HTML can be enabled on Mediawiki, but it's dangerous: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgRawHtml
Just an update on this – I'm intending to end the trial of the donate button. In the time that it's been up, there's been a total of zero donations so I'll just bear the ongoing costs of the server upgrade personally. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:25, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Visual (WYSIWYG) Editing

After much hair-tearing, I've managed to set-up node.js and Parsoid on the server, which are required to get the WYSIWYG editor for Mediawiki to work. The WYSIWYG editor is very resource intensive using up all the CPU when loading a page and at times, several gigabytes of memory. I've had to limit it to 5 instances to avoid it completely overwhelming the server (I'm not sure what will happen if more than 5 people try to use the VisualEditor simultaneously). You can still access the old source-based editor by clicking "Edit Source" instead of "Edit" if there are any issues. On longer pages, it can take a while to load. It doesn't work properly on pages with many images (namely, the Romanian pages and the Foxtel (Australia) and Fetch TV (Australia) pages. For those pages, please continue to use the source editor. This is because with all the images on those pages, the service times out due to all the resources required to load all the images. If you prefer the old editor, please continue to use it, as it will help reduce the server load. Note also that VisualEditor does not work on user talk pages, such as this one. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:28, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

There must be something wrong as Wikipedia uses it. If their version uses all their resources, Wikipedia would never load. Branch (talk) 18:40, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
It seems fine on most pages; it's just the ones with lots of station logos that it really struggles with, and Wikipedia doesn't really have pages with hundreds of logos on them. I think these issues are to be expected. On VisualEditor's page on Mediawiki, it states about VisualEditor's limitations: "Slow to load — It will take some time for long, complex pages to load into VisualEditor. In the future the software will be a lot faster, and will allow for the loading of larger pages." I also assume Wikipedia has significantly more server resources available. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:31, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Standard Page Naming Conventions

I've noticed there are a few line-ups that just have their page name as the provider's name (e.g. Destiny Cable instead of List of channels on Destiny Cable), so I've created standard page naming guidelines and have added them to the policies page. We should probably rename non-descriptive page titles like the example. I will do it in the next few days if no one else gets to it in the meantime. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:49, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Looks great! As I work on color standardization I'll put it there. Branch (talk) 23:41, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

HTTP > HTTPS Redirects Broken

I have noticed that it now redirects to the main page if an HTTP (non-HTTPS) link to a channel list is clicked. This is something to do with the redirection to HTTPS. Can this be fixed? Aetnla (talk) 10:41, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Aetnla. As we're about to move hosts, I've just disabled force HTTPS for now to resolve the issue. I'll try to figure it out once we've moved across. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:57, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
An HTTP page request should redirect to its HTTPS counterpart. Instead it redirects to the home page, which isn't good. Branch (talk) 12:05, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I can't easily fix this due to how the server is configured. I can try to fix it, but if it doesn't work properly, there'll be downtime, which is even worse. I note that as Google re-crawls the site, it's starting to link to the HTTPS versions of the pages instead. Given that Google accounts for about 80% of the traffic origin for this site, the redirect might not be necessary. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:09, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
There's no option to have HTTP requests get redirected to the same link in HTTPS? That's annoying. Branch (talk) 23:45, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
There is, but the function is broken because of how the data was migrated over. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:21, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, ok. Perhaps that's a question for the server people then? Branch (talk) 20:33, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
I tried that. In reply, they said that I should hire a developer experienced with Mediawiki to investigate the issue and that it might be specific to Mediawiki. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:39, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Well that makes no sense. Redirects (usually) have nothing to do with the contents of the site. I'd email them back as that makes very little sense. Branch (talk) 01:40, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
I haven't been able to find a resolution to this as of yet. I'd suggest simply going to the HTTPS version of the website if you want HTTPS. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:46, 1 September 2016 (UTC)

Temporary ban proposal: Robert201

Trying to simplify the analog section for RCS & RDS, Robert201 started again to undo my edits and messed up my splitting process. Along with that, a few weeks earlier, he changed some logos on purpose twice and I had to undo his trolling. I am sick of him. ScytheChariot (talk) 19:00, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

UPDATE: Reasoned with him on a Romanian site (forum). Just misunderstanding. To be archived. ScytheChariot (talk) 20:15, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Scy, for future reference, as long as you follow this policy: https://www.tvchannellists.com/Disclaimers_%26_Policies#Policies you don't have to ask.
Thank you and sorry, I keep forgeting about the policies. ScytheChariot (talk) 07:54, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

MediaWiki Update

I have updated the website to MediaWiki 1.27.1. If you encounter any issues, please let me know and I'll look into it. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:29, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

HTTPS Redirection

I've finally managed to get the HTTP => HTTPS redirection working properly without the redirect going back to the main page. As such. I've re-enabled the automatic HTTPS redirection. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:43, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

Awesome! Branch (talk) 19:56, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Inactive Accounts Purge

Back in the early days of TVCL, we had some major spam issues. The spam was cleaned up and the issue resolved; however, a remnant of this was having over 1,000 registered accounts on the website. I've run a maintenance script to delete any account that has not made any contributions to the website and hasn't been logged into for the past two months. The subsequent user count following the purge is now under 100. Tvchannellists (talk) 05:27, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

I think all inactive accounts (no logins in 6 months) should just be auto-purged. Thoughts? Branch (talk) 19:55, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
I've seen accounts inactive for longer than 6 months become active again; however, I guess they could always just make another account. I'm not sure if there's even a function to automatically purge inactive accounts in Mediawiki. I only found a function to delete accounts that didn't have any contributions. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:38, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
I've gone through an purged some more accounts that hadn't really made any contributions. The user count is now in the 60s. I don't know if I can get rid of the blocked accounts though, as I'm not sure if it removes the block when I delete them, which wouldn't be something we'd want. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:39, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

More vandalism

Just reverted someone who distorted the AT&T U-Verse page. Trying to determine since it wasn't a normal IP address. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:21, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

Appears to be an IPv6 address – assigned to AT&T, from what I can tell. @Branch Regarding your request for IPv6 on the site, I guess this shows that the site accessible via IPv6. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:39, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Cool! Thanks! Branch (talk) 19:56, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Can't access the site

Since last week, I can't access the site on a certain PC on any internet browser and I get this message on Google Chrome:

"This site can't provide a secure conection

The following site is using an unsupported protocol

ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH" ScytheChariot (talk) 11:24, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Hmm, I'm not sure why. I ran several web-based tests on the SSL set-up and I didn't get an error on any of the test sites. I've also tested the website on Windows, Mac and Android with Chrome, Firefox and IE and didn't get any problems. The site's analytics don't show any significant dip in visitors for the past two-week period either. If you want I can turn off the forced HTTPS redirection so you can continue to access the website on plain HTTP without encryption. What does it tell you when you visit this test site? Tvchannellists (talk) 12:11, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
I can confirm it's also working fine for me on OS X Chrome. Branch (talk) 23:46, 21 September 2016 (UTC)
Still unsolved; Probably it was Windows XP's fault? Also, I ran the SSL test and everything was fine. Well, it doesn't matter anymore since I can access regularly the site from a Windows 7 PC, where everything is fine. ScytheChariot (talk) 15:20, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

SuperMarioPlayer Vandalism

Looks like SuperMarioPlayer is back to his old habits since I reverted two more edits of him posting gibberish on Verizon line-up pages. There has also been some fresh IP vandalism on the AT&T U-Verse page which was similar to a previous vandalism incident by posting incorrect or non-existent SD channel numbers. --Longislandmedia (talk) 17:55, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

As per site policy he's been banned for 3 months (as his last ban was one month). He will get one more chance before it's permanent. Branch (talk) 22:14, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

Just reverted similar vandalism on the Frontier Fios (Indiana, Oregon, Washington) page under a different address. Since it's the same Step by Step gibberish, it's got to be SuperMarioPlayer (even if my comment mis-attributed it to Nintendo Player) --Longislandmedia (talk) 21:01, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

Just placed a one week ban on that IP as per site policy due to the fact that SuperMarioPlayer has never used that IP to edit. Interestingly enough SuperMarioPlayer and NintendoPlayer have used the same IP, though, so I will keep an eye on them both. Branch (talk) 21:58, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
My guess would be that they are the same person, given the common IP address and both of the account names ending in "Player". Seems IPv6 access is opening up a can of worms in terms of block/ban circumvention. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:29, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
How is IPv6 allowing people to circumvent anymore? If either of the two accounts posts any more related spam, I'll block them both permanently as duplicate accounts are not allowed, and SuperMarioPlayer is on his last warning. Branch (talk) 15:22, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
Assuming an unregistered user, if their IPv4 address is blocked, the person can use their IPv6 address instead. Also, given the limited supply of IPv4 addresses, many ISPs will only issue one IPv4 address to a subscriber; however, with IPv6 having an enormous amount of IP addresses, some ISPs allow for multiple IP addresses per subscriber. In those cases, the person can easily switch IP addresses and circumvent blocks applied to specific IP addresses. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:35, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Also, LongIslandMedia, would you like to become an admin (have rollback and blocking abilities)? I think you'd make a good one! Branch (talk) 15:23, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Sorry I haven't had a chance to respond. I have a lot of busy time and bad hours so I just post when I can. I also received an email stating that I requested a password reset even though didn't send one. I just hope someone wasn't trying to hack into my account.--Longislandmedia (talk) 03:40, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Assuming the person who requested the reset doesn't have access to your e-mail, I think your account should be fine. Given that your password hasn't actually been reset and you can still get into your account, I would assume there was no intrusion. Tvchannellists (talk) 05:05, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
LongIslandMedia, I'm not on the site a lot either, but you're really good at catching vandalism, and if you want it, I think you'd make an awesome admin. Branch (talk) 12:59, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

So I've determined using checkuser that SuperMarioPlayer, NintendoPlayer, and the brand new Number 1 Player are all the same person. Here's where I'm conflicted though: SuperMarioPlayer account only posted spam, but NintendoPlayer actually makes some useful edits regarding the correct Wikipedia links, so I'm not sure if I should ban them. I've certainly banned new account creation from that IP. Branch (talk) 11:19, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I've had the same dilemma in the past when blocking those sets of accounts due to vandalism. At times, the posts are contributory but other times, it's vandalistic in nature (like adding song lyrics or random details about shows). So far, I've just blocked the specific offending account, but what you've done (blocking additional accounts from the same IP address) sounds like a good idea. The other thing is he has three sets of IP addresses he edits from – his home (AT&T), on his mobile/cellular (T-Mobile) device and at school (located in Los Angeles county, CA). The previously much-discussed 99.109.90.90 IP address is also the same user, as far as I can tell. I don't understand why someone would alternate between being productive and destructive in the first place... Tvchannellists (talk) 00:51, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
I know, it's weird. Maybe some accounts were hacked? I'm not sure. What say we on requiring an account to edit any page? It's not like it's that hard to get an account, and it will help with blocking etc. Branch (talk) 12:59, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
I wouldn't think that that's the case, since it's only the 'Player' accounts doing that and the IP addresses have been consistently from the same ISPs and he's been doing this for more than a year, I think. You'd think also he'd mention it if someone else was accessing his accounts and posting vandalism. I'm reluctant to block anonymous editing as there a fair few good contributors to the site who haven't signed up and I'm afraid that those contributors will simply stop contributing. I don't think it'd stop those trying to get around blocks as they can simply get a new IP address (e.g. via a VPN) and then make a new account. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:37, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

I just reverted some more anonymous vandalism on the DirecTV and Dish Network pages. They included falsely identifying channels as HD only, and on the Dish Network pages, blanking the international channel listings (although they are quite out of date since many channels have been moved and Hopper variations need to be included). I don't know if they share the same IP addresses as other vandals, but it should be looked into. --Longislandmedia (talk) 06:05, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Longislandmedia. From what I can tell, they're both AT&T IP addresses. Apart from those recent edits that you reverted, I can't see any other edits from those IP addresses. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:56, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

I just changed some edits which included some incorrect information, although some were corrections for errors that IP address 99.109. (I forgot the rest) used to do. Since he is on AT&T, it looks like he may be trying to circumvent his ban.--Longislandmedia (talk) 04:58, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Longislandmedia. If you think it would help with the vandalism, I can apply protection to the pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:19, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
It looks like all DirecTV and Dish Network pages will need protection since that's where I have been reverting edits.--Longislandmedia (talk) 18:39, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
I've applied protection onto those pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:00, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

Vandalism on Sky UK & Ireland and Forthcoming channels UK & Ireland pages

User with IP address 86.42.138.141‎ is continuing to add made up kids channels to these pages on a daily basis.

Hi Disco. Thanks for the vandalism report. I have placed a warning on 86.42.138.141's user page. Please let us know if there is any subsequent vandalism from this IP address and a ban will be applied as per the site's policies. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:24, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. A further instance today on the Sky UK and Ireland page - same user but this time using IP address 92.251.170.107. Disco

Hi Disco. I've enacted a one-week ban on both of those IP addresses as per the site's policies. However, the latter IP address appears to be a mobile IP address, so it's difficult to block that user, as IP addresses assigned to mobile devices can often change. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:26, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. She or he is now using 178.167.254.75 - see Forthcoming Channels page. Disco

Hi Disco. I've applied a one-month ban to the new IP address as well as the previous ones. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:42, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
If there continues to be vandalism, let me know, and I'll apply protection on the page so that only registered users can edit it. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:06, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Several acts of vandalism this morning on the Sky UK & Ireland, 2016 channel changes and Virgin UK pages from IP 2a02:c7d:501b:dd00:d189:bd84:2741:910c. I think now would be the time to allow only registered uses to edit the UK pages. In fact given the vandalism problems more generally I'd recommend doing so for the site as a whole
I've added protection to the UK pages. Regarding requiring registration, if there continues to be issues after this instance, I will make registration mandatory in order to edit as I've noticed a bit of a catch 22 regarding the protection of pages. You need to be registered and have 10 edits in order to edit a protected page. But say you lived in the UK and could only contribute for the UK pages and all the UK pages were protected, no new user would be able to contribute anything. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:24, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
I say required registration, and then just mass-remove protection (except on admin-only pages which should stay admin only) Branch (talk) 15:11, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
I had the same feeling while editing Wikipedia. Lots of vandalism occurred on channel pages during the summer, which annoyed me as a whole. 78.143.168.59 17:58, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
Here are some examples of stupid edits:
* Magic (13 August 2016)
* Scuzz (10 July 2016)
* Chart Show Hits* (1 August 2016)
* At the time, it was CS Summer.
Thanks for your contributions, 78.143.168.59. To combat this vandalism, TV Channel Lists will now be requiring registration to make edits. As such, you will have to create an account in order to be able to continue contributing to the site. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:31, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

This would be convenient

Due to continued vandalism on TV Channel Lists, we will be requiring registration on the site in order to edit pages on this wiki. There will be no changes to viewing the website – i.e. an account will not be required to view the site.

This requirement will be implemented imminently, so please create an account to be able to continue editing on the site. Once the change has occurred, all page protection restrictions will be removed, except for admin-only pages.

This change will also improve your privacy, as IP addresses will not be publicly viewable and will only be accessible to administrators.

On a related note, a user account purge will also occur to clean out unused accounts. This will apply to accounts who have been registered for more than 30 days, but have not made any contributions to the site. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:10, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

@Tvchannellists: I am in full support of this-- and I added a copy to the front page for easier visibility. Branch (talk) 22:14, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: The new policy has now been implemented. Anonymous editing has been disabled. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:26, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
I have now removed protection on all non-admin-only pages. I've also installed an extension for the registration notice to appear on every page. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:44, 15 October 2016 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: if you remove that extension, and install the much more robust https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CentralNotice, i'll create a banner for the announcement. Branch (talk) 17:33, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: The extension you linked to says looks quite complicated and says that it's for implementation on multiple wikis and "If you only need to post messages to a single wiki, consider using Sitenotice instead." Is Sitenotice sufficient? Or is there something specific about CentralNotice that you want it for? It also says "CentralNotice is developed, tested, and known to be deployed only on wikis that do not use table prefixing. If your setup uses table prefixing there is no guarantee this plugin will work." TV Channel Lists does use table prefixes, so it might also have issues. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:38, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: SiteNotice should be good. Just the idea of having a banner as opposed to the plain text would make it more visable and make it look a little more professional. Branch (talk) 14:07, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: SiteNotice is installed by default. I've removed the current notice and have replaced it by a banner only visible to anonymous users. If you sign out, you should be able to see it. Feel free to edit it. Since most regular users should know by now about the reasons behind the change, I've simplified/shortened the text on the banner. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:58, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: How/where is it edited? Branch (talk) 01:58, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: It's located here: MediaWiki:Anonnotice‎‎ It's just HTML code in a wiki page. I believe the methodology would be similar (i.e. HTML code) if we were to use Centralnotice extension. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:05, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: I've taken out the line breaks to try and reduce the size of the notice. Whilst it looks fine on desktop, on mobile (which accounts for about 75% of the site's visitors), it takes up about a third of the screen even now without the line breaks. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:00, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: is there a way to show different ones for mobile vs. desktop? Branch (talk) 12:32, 19 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: After fiddling around a bit with the CSS, yes, it appears to be possible. Since desktops are almost always in landscape orientation, I've set it to assume it's a mobile device if the screen orientation is in portrait. At the moment, it simply hides the notice for mobile devices as the vast majority of edits to the site occur on desktop, so the notice would be mostly irrelevant to mobile viewers who (I assume) are generally just sitting in front of their TV and trying to find the channel number for the channel they want to watch. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:54, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Another Server Upgrade

There has been a bit of a spike in traffic lately, so to avoid slowdowns during peak periods, I've upgraded to a more expensive hosting plan yet again. Once the hosting provider puts the upgrade through, the site will have double the RAM and CPU cores. Hopefully, this will resolve the capacity issues. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:36, 24 October 2016 (UTC)

@tvchannellists:cool! will this help in loading visualeditor faster or is that different? Branch (talk) 01:33, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: I would think that it would help to some degree, though I'm not sure by how much. Still waiting for the hosting provider to implement the upgrade, at the moment. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:29, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
The server upgrade has now been implemented by the hosting provider. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:23, 25 October 2016 (UTC)

Number 1 Player

While this person hasn't posted anything incorrect...yet. I have my suspicions that it could be the same as Nintendo Player, SuperMarioPlayer, and the AT&T IP address since this has been mentioned in the past. It looks like going to registered users has reduced vandalism although contribution traffic has also slowed down, but at least it keeps the vandals from making a mess. --Longislandmedia (talk) 04:10, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I assume it's the same person. It's an unusual case in terms of applying the ban policy to him because at times he contributes correct information and at other times, he puts in random jibberish. I'll let Branch decide what to do since he's been implementing the bans on him so far. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:53, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
@Longislandmedia: It's hard because he does sometimes post correct information, like about Pivot (what he just added). Any jibberish will result in a 3 month ban on all their accounts (as right now i think supermario and nintendo are on 1 month). following that, it's a perm. ban as per our site policies.
I believe SuperMarioPlayer is on a longer ban for the gibberish postings. The only question is whether the postings under multiple identities is a deliberate attempt to circumvent the bans, and if they are the same person, it obviously is. --Longislandmedia (talk) 18:21, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
@Longislandmedia: you're correct, he's on his 3 month ban now. any jibberish will result in a permanent ban on all his accounts (they're already banned from making new ones). it's hard though because as I said the info they post is sometimes accurate. Branch (talk) 20:17, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Dylanman10 is vandalising the Sky UK and Forthcoming channels in UK pages with made up kids channels. It won't be the same everywhere but the main reason for reduced contribution traffic in the UK and Ireland is lack of anything happening! Disco (talk) 07:01, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Disco

I've looked at the IP addresses and it's the same vandal as before. As it's his fourth offence, I've given him a three-month ban. The next offence will be a permanent ban. If vandalism continues to be an issue, I might have to take it to the next level and introduce e-mail verification. However, the problem is, as Longislandmedia mentioned, whilst making it more difficult to contribute reduces the vandalism, it's also disincentivising legitimate contributions to the site. I've noticed a marked reduction in contributions after requiring registration to edit and I'm not sure where it's best to draw the line to strike a good balance between a crackdown on vandalism versus ensuring legitimate contributors don't avoid contributing owing to the anti-vandalism measures in place. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:53, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Further Vandalism by Number 1 Player

I just reverted an edit from Number 1 player noting more Step by Step jibberish which is what SuperMarioPlayer did. It didn't take long for the old habits to resurface.--Longislandmedia (talk) 01:42, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Number 1 Player (a.k.a. SuperMarioPlayer, NintendoPlayer, 99.109.90.90, etc.) has just created another account, 'Netflix'. I have permanently banned the new account as per site policy. As for his 'Number 1 Player' account, I'll let @Branch: decide, as he has been implementing the bans to his existing accounts so far.
Could someone also check the edits done by 'Netflix' before I blocked that account? As I don't know enough about those providers to know if the changes are accurate or not. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:43, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
Netflix actually deleted information that was on the page. Since it is clear that he is creating multiple accounts to circumvent bans than all the given accounts should go to permanent bans and that IP address blocked from any activity on this page.--Longislandmedia (talk) 22:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
Do you know if the deletions were because the deleted information was incorrect? Or it was deleted just as vandalism? I'm trying to figure out if those deletions need to be reverted.
Oddly enough, he didn't create the 'Netflix' account to circumvent bans, as he had the 'Number 1 Player' account which he could still edit from, so I don't even know why he decided to create another account. I'll give Branch the final say as to what happens next, though I agree with you and I think that a ban on all accounts/editing from that user is warranted. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:27, 2 November 2016 (UTC)
As much as I hate to say it (because he is helpful sometimes), he's violating site policy, and therefore needs a perm ban. Branch (talk) 14:47, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
I have applied the permanent ban and have posted an explanation regarding the ban on his talk page. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:36, 4 November 2016 (UTC)
It's probably the right move but it's a shame because he just added correct information about FiOS (addition of Sur Peru) that we probably wouldn't have found otherwise. If only he didn't insert so much false info. Branch (talk) 12:10, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Nintendo Player Ban

It looks like Nintendo Player's ban has ended since he did a ton of changes. While they were not vandalism, the permanent ban put on Number 1 player, Netflix has to be extended to this account and SuperMarioPlayer because of the flagrant violations of the multiple account rule. --Longislandmedia (talk) 08:58, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Permanent Ban applied. Again, you should really be a mod. Branch (talk) 01:35, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
@Branch: Thanks for getting that sorted, Branch. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:21, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Creating Pages

Where is it set up so you can create a page? I just updated the Bell page as best as I could. The Bell website and TV listings sites haven't been good on posting current information. I want to create the Bell Fibe page so I can split the Bell TV satellite and Bell Fibe IPTV listings onto separate pages. --Longislandmedia (talk) 00:34, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Longislandmedia: I've created a Bell Fibe page for you. Once info is transferred over, I'll update the home page. Are the line ups really that different? Branch (talk) 01:14, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
There are minor differences. Broadcast stations are placed differently since Bell Fibe is regional and not national. French channels are on different numbers, and some channels are on one provider, but not the other. Bell Fibe has more HD and international programming.--Longislandmedia (talk) 08:10, 6 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi Longislandmedia. To make a new page, all you need to do is to type in the title you want into the website address e.g. "http://www.tvchannellists.com/Name of New Page". Tvchannellists (talk) 20:18, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

@Longislandmedia: if you could update List of Bell TV Channels and remove the admin note and if you feel like it's ok, you can remove the banner as well. Branch (talk) 18:37, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Call to action: Charter Lineup

Hi All!

I want to delete the Bright House and Time Warner lineups as they were bought out by Charter (Spectrum). However I don't feel comfortable doing that until we have a Charter Spectrum lineup. If anyone wants to begin that, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! Branch (talk) 00:23, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

The updates that I did to the New York city lineup that I did last time included the channels that were added in November when it was changed to the Spectrum name. They are in the process of renaming the systems. The systems in Upstate NY are still using the Time Warner name for now even though the New York Metro systems have been renamed. Unless there's something different, the lineups posted just have to be renamed and moved to a Charter list.--Longislandmedia (talk) 08:40, 8 December 2016 (UTC)
@Longislandmedia: Does Spectrum have one central lineup for all its areas or is it like Comcast w/ a different lineup for each area (not counting the areas where its still technically BHN or TWC)? There's also the issue of the fact that TWC lineups look horrible (not in a table). Someone would need to make one a la Verizon/Frontier (and many other carriers on this site).Branch (talk) 18:15, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

As of right now, the systems that were under Time Warner have standardized the lineup for Channels 100 up with variations since smaller cable networks are not universally carried across Time Warner. Channels 1-99 are all different from region to region. The Brighthouse and Charter lineups are all different from location to location. The web sites are cumbersome to find channel lineups since you have to plug in zip codes to get lineups for specific systems. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:26, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

@Longislandmedia: Ah, so Comcast style. I guess I should delete them now since they're not useful anymore? Branch (talk) 18:57, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

That's the way most cable systems in the US are anyway. Only Dish and the Telco-Fiber companies are standardized. We could just rename the existing pages to Spectrum and keep the separate city lineups that are listed. We would probably need more people to gather the other lineups. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:10, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@Longislandmedia: Well we do need Comcast (close to, if not, #1 provider in the US). And if we want to keep TWC and BHN and add Charter they need to be in tables with package listings like others. I'm also going to delete Midco because that lineup is just a mess-- there's not even channel numbers. Branch (talk) 20:15, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

The Arcadian

Apparently, we have a new poster who is emulating the habit of a certain multi-banned account spammer. (Nintendo player, supermarioplayer, number 1 player, Netflix, 99.109 IP address). Can someone confirm if it's the same person? Maybe I should take that administration position so that I can keep blocking his attempts to post if it is him.--Longislandmedia (talk) 06:02, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

@Longislandmedia: Yep, it was them. They've been blocked. @Tvchannellists:, can you make LongIslandMedia an admin?. Branch (talk) 13:29, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

And now he's created another account, Arcadian photo. At this point, a report to his IP provider for abuse may be necessary since he continues to troll with a new account after each account gets banned. His provider could penalize him for this abuse. --Longislandmedia (talk) 07:15, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

I've blocked the new account. I'm not sure a report to the ISP would achieve anything, as he's not actually doing anything illegal, as far as I can tell. His IP addresses alternate between "Los Angeles County Office of Education" (where I assume he attends school), AT&T (I assume his ISP at home) and T-Mobile (I assume his cellular device). Tvchannellists (talk) 11:30, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

I guess we just have to block every new account he creates. The only thing is it can be considered trolling behavior.--Longislandmedia (talk) 16:33, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

I've gone through and blocked every IP he's used that I can find. @Tvchannellists: can you make LongIslandMedia an admin? Branch (talk) 20:19, 16 December 2016 (UTC)
Sure, if Longislandmedia replies here and says he wants to be an admin, I'll promote him. Tvchannellists (talk) 20:26, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

Count me in.--Longislandmedia (talk) 21:17, 16 December 2016 (UTC) I guess I need to learn how to check IP addresses. I was trying to check if new user Apaches101 has a similar IP address since he posted on many of the same pages. No false info yet, but knowing his MO, I just want to be sure. --Longislandmedia (talk) 04:48, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

You can use Check User (see special pages on the left side of the page) and that gives you tons of info. Branch (talk) 15:47, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
Is it supposed to be on the left side with tools. I have block user, but not check user there. I caught some changes on Dish Network that I can't verify, but I reverted 2 that I know to be false. Unfortunately, my main reference source, jameslong.name hasn't been updated since August and it used to be updated daily. I am starting to suspect our troll created another user name.--Longislandmedia (talk) 06:50, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
@Longislandmedia:Can you access this page? Special:CheckUser Tvchannellists (talk) 11:21, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
I was able to get into that. It looks I have to go off site to check the address listed. Which option is the best for tracing? First time I really did this sort of thing.--Longislandmedia (talk) 13:02, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
Apaches101 is using an IPv6 address, which is a bit harder to track. Normally, with IPv4 addresses, the 'WHOIS' button will give enough details, but in the case of IPv6, try the 'Geolocate' option instead. That reveals that Apaches101 is using AT&T and is located somewhere around San Diego. It also indicates that the IPv6 range he's using is for mobiles/cell phones, which is why there are numerous IP addresses tied to that account, as cell phones don't usually have static IP addresses, making it more difficult to block. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:22, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

That explains a lot. Our previous offender does have an AT&T account. The only question is if he is using those IP addresses to hide his trail. I may have to wait until he reverts to form with blatantly false posts or Step by Step and Blossom jibberish. He stated that DirecTV dropped all their Indian channels, but I don't have access to that satellite to confirm it. So, it remains to be determined if they went Dish Network exclusive, or DirecTV is vacating the 95 degree orbital location like they have 72.7.--Longislandmedia (talk) 15:15, 19 December 2016 (UTC) According to Lyngsat, the Indian channels are still on DirecTV.--Longislandmedia (talk) 15:24, 19 December 2016 (UTC) He does share the same behavior of the banned users, but I will have to wait until he published false information or gibberish in order to take action.--Longislandmedia (talk) 15:49, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

I did notice the similar behavior. However as you said unless using the check user you can verify it's them, we have to follow the graduated ban policy. Branch (talk) 18:05, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

I am keeping an eye on him. I had to correct his Bridges TV note. Granted, that channel had a fairly obscure history that most people wouldn't know about. He's been good at hiding his IP address, but I am waiting for him to slip up because if he's who I think he is, he very likely will.--Longislandmedia (talk) 01:08, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

VisualEdit is broken

titles explains it! Branch (talk) 14:47, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

@Branch: Thanks for letting me know, Branch. I've restarted the Parsoid service and it seems to be working again now. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:04, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

New account Dylan fagan‎ vandalising again

Dylan fagan‎ is vandalising the Sky and UK/Ireland forthcoming changes pages again with made up kids channel launches. Presumably the ban imposed has come to an end.

@Disco: Hi Disco. Thanks for reporting the vandalism. The ban that was imposed was permanent; however, he has made a new account. I have applied a permanent ban to that account now as well. Tvchannellists (talk) 19:02, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
It's still occurring? I thought it ended a few months ago! POWERStarz2004 (talk) 19:18, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
@POWERStarz2004: It did, but he made a new account a day or two ago to circumvent the ban. Tvchannellists (talk) 20:07, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: Thanks. POWERStarz2004 (talk) 21:05, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

Back vandalising the Sky UK again with made kids' channels - now under user name Sunita fagan.

Blocked. thank you. Branch (talk) 18:11, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

Happy New Year

I want to wish everyone at Tvchannellists a very Happy New Year. POWERStarz2004 (talk) 00:04, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, POWERStarz2004. Happy New Year to you and everyone else here as well. Thank you also to everyone for their contributions throughout the year and to the admins for their administration of the site policies, keeping the many trolls and spammers at bay. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:22, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
Happy new year to everyone! Here's what happened in 2016: https://www.tvchannellists.com/Site_News_%26_Updates. It's a lot! In 2017 we should focus on clearing out the list of pages needing improvement and adding lineup data for the new Charter Spectrum and also Comcast, the two biggest tv providers in the US. Branch (talk) 14:29, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

E-Mail

Hey, do you by any chance have a webmaster email set up for contact? Mynameisjeff (talk) 20:09, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

There is, but, generally, I'd prefer you use the talk pages as there are several admins here who can assist, whereas only I have access to the e-mail address and I don't generally use it. However, if you need to discuss something that you don't want to appear on the website, try [email protected] Tvchannellists (talk) 20:41, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
OK... Emailed! Check your spam folder, the protonmail signature might be generating problems. Mynameisjeff (talk) 21:34, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

SBB

Mind if we add this (https://www.tvchannellists.com/List_of_Channels_on_SBB_%28D3%29) to the home page? I almost finished it, gonna expand it even more soon. Mynameisjeff (talk) 15:34, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Please add this source in the Home Page:

|- | style="font-weight: bold;" | Serbia Flag-rs.png | Cable
SBB

All done. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:52, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Gonna add the radios now, then I'm finished. Just gonna double check if the frequencies and the channel data are correct, will mess with the logos later as it's pretty annoying. Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:13, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: Finished. If anyone wants to assist with the logos that would be nice. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:31, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
Just did some fixing, can you correct the link on the front page from "List of Channels on SBB (D3)" to "List of channels on SBB (D3)"? Thanks. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:17, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: Anyone? Also, RTY1957, please stop reverting the move for the reasons I already explained. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:10, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mynameisjeff: Apologies for the delay; this has been corrected now. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:20, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mynameisjeff: No need to apologize. Also, thanks. Mynameisjeff (talk) 22:25, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Images

I'd like to have image deletion permissions. So many duplicates, so little time... Mynameisjeff (talk) 14:38, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Give it a try now. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:03, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

SKY HD México

Please add this link in the Home Page... ( https://www.tvchannellists.com/List_of_channels_on_Sky_HD_(México) ) Country: México Name: SKY HD Satellite

Javier38 (talk) 20:36, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

All done. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:22, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

Robert201

I believe he was blocked by mistake, TBH. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:37, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

Block removed. I will presume his blanking was unintentional and trying to clean up Admin's vandalism. --Longislandmedia (talk) 19:07, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

CataGamerTVCL

I also woke up and saw a massive amount of vandalism with pages being blanked with non-English comments about a Romanian provider. When I saw it posted on the Verizon Fios page, I reverted it and then Admin started posting it on my talk pages. I blocked a few accounts posting this stuff and mynameisjeff helped with cleaning up the European pages which were also vandalized. --Longislandmedia (talk) 16:25, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

No problem. There is also Shauna fagan‎, a known sock which posts made up kids channels on the UK lineups. There were posts about it here. Also "password", pretty sure that's another Admin sock. I also think it would be smart to lock out talk pages for them too, as Admin spammed the living hell out of everyone with mentions on his talk page. Mynameisjeff (talk) 16:27, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
From what I can tell, Password, Username and Admin are all the previously blocked user CataGamerTVCL, given the same pattern of posting about TVR to users' talk pages. All these new accounts now have indefinite blocks. I've also indefinitely blocked Fagan's duplicate account as per site policy on multiple accounts. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:11, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I also wanted to thank Longislandmedia and Mynameisjeff for cleaning up the mess the trolls made. We have three main trolls on this site at the moment: 99.109.90.90 (SuperNintendoPlayer, etc.) (California), CataGamerTVCL (Romania) and Dylan Fagan (Ireland). Tvchannellists (talk) 23:22, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
We should also NOT allow people to be named "Admin", for obvious purposes. Branch (talk) 23:17, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I agree. I'm surprised MediaWiki even lets an account named 'Admin' be created. But since that account now exists and is blocked, I assume there can't be any other users under the name 'Admin'. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:22, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
I adjusted CataGamer's ban from the 3 month they were on to indefinite for breaches in site policy. Branch (talk) 02:01, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello

May i block people please? Maria-Alexandra (talk) 12:25, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Hello. Only admins can block users. If you think someone has contravened the site's policies, please provide the details here and one of the admins will apply the block, if appropriate. Thanks. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:21, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
@Tvchanellists I need more edits so i can be an admin. Maria-Alexandra (talk) 11:15, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
You shouldn't be making edits just to be an admin. Again, if you need someone blocked, let us know and we'll do it. Branch (talk) 13:39, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

This page

https://www.tvchannellists.com/Old_Channel_List_of_digital_channels_on_RCS_%26_RDS Isn't this kind of useless? Also, it's a complete mess, but I can sort that out. BTW Why was CataGamer banned? Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:08, 9 February 2017 (UTC)

CataGamerTVCL was blocked by Scythechariot due to his consistent vandalism:
I believe he is also the same user as 'Password', 'Username' and 'Admin'. Compare CataGamerTVCL's spam:

Regarding the Old Channel List-- I propose deletion. No need for old channel lists on this site. Old channel changes are one thing-- but channel lists are completely useless. Thoughts? Branch (talk) 02:33, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
Support for deletion. That makes 3/5 admins, so I'm deleting the page. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:53, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
Coming back to Catagamer-- is it just my talkpage that gets spammed? Anyone else's talkpage? Branch (talk) 01:59, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
He posted on my talk page when I reverted the vandalism edits he did on the Verizon FiOS page. --Longislandmedia (talk) 05:51, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
He blanked this talk page as well. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:46, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Help!

TVR 4 has edited Canal S. I reverted his edit. Could you block him for infinite please? Thanks. Maria-Alexandra (talk) 08:48, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

He's blocked already. Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:58, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

TOR

I think instead of banning exit nodes, we should install more DNSBL's to prevent TOR users from registering. Also required email (and whitelisted email, there are tons of disposable ones). Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:58, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

I will be installing this extension soon: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:TorBlock
If that doesn't resolve the issues, I'll add more counter-measures. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:00, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
Still doesn't prevent him from using proxy apps/web proxies and the likes, so I think DNSBL's and maybe this extension (If the DNSBL's don't block TOR that good) too are the way to go. Mynameisjeff (talk) 09:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
DNSBLs were already in use; I've added the extension now also. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:17, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
OK! Also, check you email. Mynameisjeff (talk) 09:19, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Additional admin – Mynameisjeff

Please welcome Mynameisjeff as the fifth site admin, who has been very active in cleaning out the vandalism, spam, false information and duplicates here on TV Channel Lists. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:44, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Robert201

As per site policy, Robert201 has been permanently banned from the website due to the use of multiple accounts (RTY1957, RTY1958) to circumvent bans, as well vandalism and false information. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:47, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Another banned sock on the list: BKS1878. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:17, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Proxies blocked from editing

I am trialling the AutoProxyBlock extension to try and curtail our resident trolls' attempts to circumvent their bans. If I've set it up correctly, it should be using Wikipedia's proxy ban list. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:33, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

I'm not sure that it's working; however, we also have the TOR blocking extension and DNSBL active, which will hopefully limit the trolls from editing. Tvchannellists (talk) 14:22, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
You should remove both the TOR and the AutoProxyBlock extension, none of them are working, TVR 5 just registered with TOR. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:25, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
I've removed the extensions for now. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:29, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Block and nuke should also be removed, no longer working. Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:02, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Done. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:47, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
What is TOR? Maria-Alexandra (talk) 17:29, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
It allows for anonymised access to the Internet – somewhat similar to a VPN. See: Tor (anonymity network) Tvchannellists (talk) 02:29, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Apaches 101

It looks like he finally tripped up. I just put the first ban on his account because he was falsely posting Esquire removals in March that are not confirmed since announcements were that the channel is supposed to shut down this summer. He also prematurely took Cloo off lineups ahead of the February 1st shutdown which is so far only based on notifications from affiliates but no official announcement from Cloo. This does confirm to me that Apaches 101 is our multiple account spammer since he usually takes awhile before posting false stuff. Since I only gave him a one-week ban on the account, I did permanent ban--Longislandmedia (talk) 05:19, 1 February 2017 (UTC)s on his IP addresses so that he cannot create additional accounts to circumvent the bans. --Longislandmedia (talk) 07:19, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

Just had to block another account created, Arcadian Yearbook since it seems like he is again creating another account to avoid his ban so I made both accounts permanent bans. --Longislandmedia (talk) 05:19, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Just blocked two more accounts AHS2017 and AHSClass2017 which I wasn't sure, but also seem to be from our multiple account abuser. This is just getting too ridiculous in that he constantly tries to circumvent the bans. It might be a good idea to just block his AT&T ISP at this point and see what that does.--Longislandmedia (talk) 03:47, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

AT&T is a huge ISP to ban though; banning AT&T would result in many potential users being blocked as it's one of the largest ISPs in the U.S. Even if we do block AT&T, he also edits from his cellular IP address range (T-Mobile) and from his school IP address range as well. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:52, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
Doesn't the policy state that if one is using proxies/VPN's/private networks/schools/etc to vandalize, we have the right to ban the range? Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:26, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
We can ban a range, but not a whole ISP. Branch (talk) 13:11, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
That may be the way to go. When I banned the one account, I blocked about 18 IP and VPN addresses that he had been using under that handle. but I never set up range blocks. --Longislandmedia (talk) 05:34, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm OK with applying range blocks for persistent breaches of site policy. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:22, 7 February 2017 (UTC)
Banned the range since there are reports of this going way back to September 2016. Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:49, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Updated Misconduct Policy & DC/Policy Page

I updated the Misconduct Policy to remove references to anonymous/IP-only editing, since that's no longer possible anymore.

I also moved "Personal Attacks on Other Users" to permanent ban, from the graduated ban. Even though we haven't had an incident yet, I feel we shouldn't give second chances-- though I'm happy to change it back if other admins feel differently.

Finally, I added a section about changes to the page, so users know how to suggest changes, and are aware of the voting procedure we've been using (simple majority of admins).

Branch (talk) 02:10, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, Branch. I'm fine with the change. Another rule to consider implementing is the disallowing of any editing from anonymised IP addresses, due to the blocked users using these services to create new accounts. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:12, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Well anon-IP users can't edit, right? Do you mean creating accounts with anon-IPs? Also, one more admin and the change to personal attacks stays. Branch (talk) 13:28, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm neutral. Mostly depends on what you mean by "personal attacks", is it just being aggressive or being really insulting? The problem is that some people can make good contributions to the site, but when involved in disputes become aggressive and/or really insulting, but, I also think this is a good idea too, as some really aren't fit with for wikias. For now I vote yes, but we will see how it pans out. Mynameisjeff (talk) 13:36, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
While on the topic of new policies, I really think we need to have some sort of punishment for ignoring advices/warning/questions about edits/etc. on talk pages from admins. It's really annoying. Mynameisjeff (talk) 14:00, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
By personal attacks I don't mean just an insult, like "your edit sucks", I mean something more along the lines of a personal attack where the attack is based solely on the user and has no basis in the wiki. I'll keep the change in limbo until another admin gives their approval. If they don't, I'll revert back. I don't think we can punish users for not responding to admin's questions, but ignoring warnings on site policy would allow the admin to move up in the graduated ban system (1 week) Branch (talk) 14:26, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough, I support then. By ignoring admins on talk pages I mean when an admin posts on your talk page because you removed some content (or all) with no explanation, added false and/or unsourced info, etc. and that user purposely ignores you on their talk page. That's the kind of situations that should be avoided. Mynameisjeff (talk) 14:31, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
With 3/5 admins, the change to personal attacks has officially passed. Regarding users ignoring you about adding false or unsourced info (or any other "minor" offense), if they do it again after warning, you can block them for one week, then month, etc etc in accordance with our graduated ban system. Branch (talk) 14:36, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Updated the policy because of our new email required editing/registration rule. Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:49, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Maybe this will help with the cache issues with the logos

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:CloudFlare#Cache_control

Whilst the caching causes issues when logos are updated, generally, the images should be cached, as the logos are one of the largest users of the site's bandwidth. I'm trying to avoid needing to upgrade the site's resources again as it's already on its 4th upgrade and these upgrades incur ongoing increased costs to keep the site up. If you've done an update of logos, you can let me know and I can do a cache purge on Cloudflare. I've completely purged the cache just now (I can also do one by one image cache purges). Tvchannellists (talk) 12:09, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Looks like after the PHP update it's finally caching properly. Also, check you email. Mynameisjeff (talk) 16:55, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Country flags

I am in the process of uploading new country flags. I think you'll like them. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:21, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Uploaded. If any of the admins want the old flags back, message me and I'll revert. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:41, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for that. They're clearer than the old ones. Even though I cleared the cache, some flags were still stuck on the old one and I had to use Ctrl+Refresh in Chrome to get it to update (just refreshing didn't make Chrome reload the image). Tvchannellists (talk) 12:11, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
No problem. Do you like them? I will still keep the old revisions of the old flags just in case though. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:12, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm good with the new ones; either set's fine with me. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:36, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
I'll vote for them (making 3/5 admins), though they are a bit fuzzy on my screen-- may just be me. Branch (talk) 13:27, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
All fine here, no fuzziness. Try doing F5, maybe it has caching issues? Mynameisjeff (talk) 13:30, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Cleared the cache and they look so much better-- great job! These now have my full support. Branch (talk) 13:36, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks! Mynameisjeff (talk) 13:37, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mynameisjeff: i gave them their own column so they're all aligned. only thing I couldn't figure out was how to pad the text of the first and third column so the text isn't right up against the line. Branch (talk) 13:51, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
What about only leaving the country/continent flags, then having the name of the country/continent when hovered on the flag? Seems like an OK solution to me. Mynameisjeff (talk) 13:53, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Humans process text faster than images, so I don't think that's a good idea. Branch (talk) 14:05, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
I don't know every country's flag from memory and I suspect most people would be the same, so doing that would probably slow people down if they're looking for a specific country. It'd also affect Google's indexing of the page, so I think we should leave the text. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:59, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Fair enough. I'm for leaving the text then. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:06, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Updates

MediaWiki, PHP, SQL, and ICU all need to be updated. The Echo Extension does as well. Also, how does one create a banner like the anonnotice one? Want to make the opening line of the D&P page a banner so we can have a TOC without that message showing in the TOC. Branch (talk) 14:10, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

@Branch: I have created a banner for the D&P page that doesn't show in the TOC. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:06, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Are we on shared? If so, not a lot the lead admin can do except ask for the hosting to update PHP and SQL. MediaWiki and Echo can be updated, not sure what is ICU. Mynameisjeff (talk) 14:15, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
IIRC we're not on shared (it was one of the upgrades that happened last year) anymore. ICU is just one of the things listed under PHP and SQL, that according to their site, we are about 8 versions behind on. I don't know if all of the things in my original post can be updated, just wanted to put them there in case. Branch (talk) 14:26, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
The web server is cPanel-based. cPanel does not support mySQL 5.7 – see this link for details. Until a few days ago, they said they were never going to upgrade to mySQL 5.7. I have updated PHP to 7.0. I don't know how to upgrade ICU, but I don't think it's important – seems to just be something about international character support (Unicode) and this site is in English in any case. I have also updated Echo to the latest version. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:49, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
The Echo update broke the site. It's disabled for the time being until I can get it working again. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:55, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
I will also attempt to update the site to MediaWiki 1.28 later today when it's quieter. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:16, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
The site has now been updated to MediaWiki 1.28. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:45, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
It seems like MediaWiki 1.28 is causing some errors with the site; I'm looking into it now. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:51, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Appears to be a problem with the Check User extension. I have updated the extension now. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:55, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Echo functionality has been restored. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:27, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Why do I keep getting signed out? Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:29, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
I'm not sure; I haven't had any issues. Try clearing your cookies for the site maybe? And do you have stay signed in ticked? Tvchannellists (talk) 11:31, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
All fine now, but I still think you should purge the Cloudflare cache just to make sure. Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:35, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Purge done. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:40, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Looks like the log out issue has been solved. Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:43, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

Unused accounts purge

I have purged accounts that have made no contributions to the site and have not been accessed within the past month. 64 unused accounts have been purged. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:18, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

For other admins

@ScytheChariot: and @Longislandmedia:, just wanted to know, feel free to use the headers on my user page and talk page on your own. I've found they help with directing people where to go. Branch (talk) 02:44, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks bruh. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:35, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Note about IP address blocks for other admins

I note that Dylan created a new account from the same IP address as his previous account and I was wondering why he could, given that "Automatically block the last IP address used by this user, and any subsequent IP addresses they try to edit from" was ticked. Reading up on this feature, by default, MediaWiki only applies this IP address block for 24 hours, so if you want to block the IP address permanently, you need to block the IP address itself also. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:58, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

E-Mail

We should really make e-mail required for registrations, the socks are out of control. Mynameisjeff (talk) 09:15, 12 February 2017 (UTC)

At one point in the past, I had e-mails required; however, spam bots signed up using trap e-mail addresses, placing the site on RBL listings and the whole site was suspended by the web host because "tons of spam going out for bogus account details reminders etc.". I disabled the e-mail requirement after that. Maybe it's time to try it again, though. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:36, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Can we set up an email whitelist, so that only gmail, yahoo, outlook and protonmail users for example sign up? Mynameisjeff (talk) 09:51, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
What about people who use their ISP e-mails, work e-mails, university e-mails, etc. though? Tvchannellists (talk) 09:52, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Those are very rare cases in this day and age, though. I suppose we can allow some ISP emails too. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:03, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
E-mail verification is now mandatory for edit privileges. Not sure if it affects existing users though. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:15, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
I did a test account and, yes, all existing users must now verify their e-mail addresses. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:19, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Confirmed email without any issues. Looks like it's working fine. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:22, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for checking that it works. I've added a notice that appears when anyone tries to edit a page letting know that e-mail verification is now required. Hopefully, it doesn't result in a decrease in the number of legitimate contributors. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:30, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
No problem. Also, it can only be a good thing as contributors now have a way to reset their password if they forget it. But, we can always remove the email requirement if it goes wrong. Mynameisjeff (talk) 10:32, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Yay Echo works now. Also maybe it's just placebo but I have a feeling that after you updated the PHP that the website is faster. Mynameisjeff (talk) 11:27, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, I just managed to get it back up again. Also, check your e-mail. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:29, 12 February 2017 (UTC)
For those who are interested, you can now also opt to receive e-mail notifications for various events. You can change your notification settings here.

Davideyre

The user without any contribs, Davideyre, seems to keep making sockpuppets. I really don't know what to do with him. Mynameisjeff (talk) 09:57, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

I think this is his fourth account, so I'm fine with what you've suggested – a ban on the creation of fifth account. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:57, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
BTW Can you change the keys for recaptcha, like remove the site from the recaptcha dashboard, readd it and then replace the keys in mediawiki with the newly generated ones? I think you get what I'm trying to say, also when you do that, on the recaptcha dashboard click on advanced settings and turn the security (I think that's how it's called) level all the way to high. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:05, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
@Mynameisjeff: Hi. Check your e-mail for response. Tvchannellists (talk) 12:23, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

User Account Clean-up

I've been going through and merging more accounts that are no longer required:

  • Accounts that haven't been logged into since before 2016
  • Blocked users who haven't returned in more than ~6 months
  • Users who signed up more than 30 days ago and have not contributed to the site
  • Multiple accounts from the same user
  • Users who only ever signed in once and/or only made one edit (accounts more than ~6 months old)

We're now down to 63 accounts. Tvchannellists (talk) 06:07, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Cloudflare

Please flush the cache. Mynameisjeff (talk) 15:20, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

All done. Tvchannellists (talk) 21:12, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Mynameisjeff (talk) 21:13, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

WYSIWYG bug

The WYSIWYG editor is a bit broken, it can't load on the Focus Sat page for example. The browser is Waterfox 51.0.1, and the OS is Windows 7.

For me, the WYSIWYG editor on the Focus Sat page loaded after about half a minute. Every now and again the Parsoid server the WYSIWYG editor crashes and I have to SSL into the server to start it back up, but that doesn't seem to be the case here, so I'm not sure what I can do about it. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:43, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Maintenance

I know this will probably fry the server for a bit, but I think we should run the rebuildAll.php and refreshLinks.php scripts, as I've noticed some issues with the wanted files not going away for example even after the cloudflare cache is purged.

All done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:42, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Bot account

I'd like to be able to have an alternative account that would be flagged as a bot so that whenever I am doing mass minor changes, it doesn't clog up everyone's recent page changes feed. Hope I'm not asking too much. Mynameisjeff (talk) 22:24, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Sure. Let me know when you've made the account (and the user name) and I'll see what I can do. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:28, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
Set up. Mynameisjeff ebooks (talk) 22:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
All done. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:50, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. The other admins should have bot accounts too honestly. Mynameisjeff (talk) 22:51, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
Happy to set it up if they want one. Just let me know here. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:11, 15 February 2017 (UTC)
What exactly does having a bot acct do? Why not just have one central admin bot that all the admins use? Branch (talk) 01:32, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Usually, they're used for actual bots who do maintenance, etc. The reason Mynameisjeff wanted one is for when he makes many minor changes (e.g. his recent updating of several pages to reflect a change in the link to a file), changes made by a 'bot' account don't show up in the recent changes page and thus avoids filling the recent changes page up with inconsequential minor changes. I'm happy to just have one bot account for all admins if we get 3/5; I'll e-mail the password out for the shared account. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:41, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
I support (2/5) a "TVCL Bot" account-- that would also allow people to know it's a "legit" bot compared to "Mynameisjeff ebooks" (no offense, :) ). I think also having a central bot allows for less duplicates and confusion with accounts. Branch (talk) 01:45, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Sure, so we just need Mynameisjeff to come back and agree for it to pass. The other two admins are MIA at the moment. I've also been merging all the trolls' accounts to clean up the user list. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:49, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
That makes sense. Should L.I.M. be listed as part-time now? Also, is there a way to change what the email notifications look like? It's 3 paragraphs of junk about subscribing/unsubscribing and none about the actual message left. If Myname agrees, we can just delete the ebooks account and replace it with the general bot. Branch (talk) 01:51, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Sorry but I don't think that's really a good idea. If you look at various wikias and wikipedia, they also have separate bot accounts. Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:48, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Regarding LongIslandMedia, I'm not sure. He seemed quite active on the site until 10 February, but I haven't heard from him since. As for the e-mail notification, I found this page. The referenced page doesn't seem to exist in the wiki though. Maybe you need to copy and paste it from the example and then make the modifications. If that doesn't work, I'll put whatever changes you make into the php file it mentions. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:00, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Actually, I have been sick the last few days so I have only been lurking and there was nothing for me to update. Branch beat me on Verizon adding NBC Universo HD, and out Player troll seems to have managed not to post any new accounts. Maybe the IP range bans have finally blocked his ability to create new accounts, but we shall see on that. --Longislandmedia (talk) 03:29, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the update, Longislandmedia. I'll leave you listed as a full-time admin. I hope you're feeling better. Regarding the IP range bans, hopefully, the e-mail verification requirement should put a dent in the duplicate account registrations as well. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:43, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Get well soon! Mynameisjeff (talk) 08:51, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Alright-- if we have more than one bot account, can we at least have "official" names. Instead of Ebooks, could yours be something like "MyNameisJeff - Bot" or something? Branch (talk) 15:02, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

I lost my password to that account anyways, so mynameisjeff_bot can be created and merged with the ebooks one. -Mynameisjeff (talk) 15:04, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
Let me know when you've made the 'mynameisjeff_bot' account and I'll merge it with the old account. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:44, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

Automatic Unused Accounts Purge

To keep the user list tidy, I've now set the server to automatically purge accounts where an account has been created and has not been touched for 30 days from the date of creation. This automatic purge does not affect users that have made any contributions to the site (e.g. edits, uploads, new pages, etc.) Tvchannellists (talk) 08:23, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but what exactly do we gain from doing this? Also, on another note, have you ever considered to implement something like memcached to the site? Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:56, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
This only affects accounts that are created and never used even once. If you make even one contribution, this automatic script doesn't affect you. I assume some of these would potentially be spam accounts and not legitimate users. The purpose of this is to keep the user list manageable. If you look at the user ID number, you'll see that we are into the thousands (it started sequentially from 1), whilst there are only about a dozen or so actual contributors. That provides an indication of how many unused/spam accounts I've had to delete over time. There seems to be a continuous stream every month of new accounts that are never used. I'll look into memcached. Tvchannellists (talk) 21:32, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Also, any chance of updating the PHP to 7.1.2 and moving to MariaDB? Also, what's the Nginx version? Mynameisjeff (talk) 21:41, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
PHP 7.0 is the highest option currently available in the site's cPanel control panel. I don't see an option to change what SQL server the site uses either. I'm not sure how to check the Nginx version. Regarding memcached, it seems like it's more hassle than it's worth. This page seems to suggest that it often crashes and needs restarting (something I already have to do with the Parsoid server for the VisualEditor) and Mediawiki's page on it says "Memcached is likely more trouble than a small site will need". It also states "Memcached has no security or authentication. Please ensure that your server is appropriately firewalled" and I don't have access to firewall settings on the server. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:04, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
I think it's just to have a better sense of how many active users, and so the user list isn't clogged up with unused accounts. An automated purge system/official policy on unused accounts (that were used in the first 30 days but then abandoned) would be good. Branch (talk) 19:33, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
I've been doing this manually (for accounts that have been used at least once) as some users disappear for months at a time and it's just a judgement call based on how much they've contributed and how long they've been inactive. I'd be fine for a policy regarding purging completely unused accounts after 30 days. Tvchannellists (talk) 21:32, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Security issue

https://blog.cloudflare.com/incident-report-on-memory-leak-caused-by-cloudflare-parser-bug/ Change your passwords ASAP. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:32, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

It should be ok. Extract of e-mail received from CloudFlare: "In our review of these third party caches, we discovered data that had been exposed from approximately 150 of Cloudflare's customers across our Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. We have reached out to these customers directly to provide them with a copy of the data that was exposed, help them understand its impact, and help them mitigate that impact. Fortunately, your domain is not one of the domains where we have discovered exposed data in any third party caches." Tvchannellists (talk) 00:06, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

UPC should be only edited by Autoconfirmed users and Admins.

Could you protect UPC romania please? It should be only edited by autoconfirmed users and admins. Im a autoconfirmed user on Tvchannellists. Alexandra (talk) 10:22, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

all edits require being a user now. Branch (talk) 12:21, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
There is absolutely zero valid reason to protect the page from new users, in fact it's one of the less vandalized (if vandalized at all) pages on this website, so this request has been denied. Mynameisjeff (talk) 12:26, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
"Autoconfirmed is a user group that... are more than 4 days old and have made at least 10 changes". There are very few, if any, pages that need that protection as anyone could wait four days and make 10 edits. Therefore, I second the denial of this request, unless the requester provides evidence on why this protection would help, which they did not do. Branch (talk) 16:21, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
Agreed – it's only necessary on pages with persistent vandalism. The recent tightening on the ability to edit (i.e. account creation + e-mail verification) further diminish the need for protection of pages. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:01, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
With 3/5 admins in agreement, the request for protection on UPC Romania has been officially declined. Branch (talk) 01:23, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
It's enough for even 1 admin to decline for it to be considered "official" when it comes to invalid requests like this. If the requester actually has a (valid) reason as to why they think the page should be protected, sure, there should definitely be a discussion, but with situation like this in my opinion even 1 admin is enough to decline. Mynameisjeff (talk) 06:27, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Could you show me the edit count please? Alexandra (talk) 19:41, 1 March 2017 (UTC)

Twinkle

Can we possibly add Twinkle to this site? Mynameisjeff (talk) 06:42, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

I tried, but in the Üser on other wikis" section of Twinkle's user's guide page, it says "most modules have been designed only with English Wikipedia in mind. For instance, the CSD module relies on templates which most likely do not exist on other wikis." Tvchannellists (talk) 10:30, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

URGENT: Admins, Please Read

UPDATE: Mynameisjeff fixed the spam, but my proposals at the bottom still stand.

România and Brânch and MyNameîsJeff (not the admins, they were imposters), vandalized and moved about 10 different pages, including this one and my talk page. I blocked them before they could to too much more, but I need help reverting it as I'm not going to be around later today. Appears that I blocked the first one, then the second one was made to try to impersonate me by stealing my talk page. Look at Recent page changes for the moves. I restored my talk page and this, but that's it. Can other admins delete the new pages made and fix the old ones? Thanks!

all were made by our favorite, CataGamerTVCL Branch (talk) 16:42, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

These imposter account names could be of great use for our alternative accounts (use such as on public wifis, public computers etc. where access to an admin account is really risky), what a waste :D
I'll get on it now.
Also, to me this seems more of a case of meat puppetry rather then a single person. Mynameisjeff (talk) 16:48, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I just emailed you regarding this. Branch (talk) 16:50, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I switched emails, the webmaster could email you my new email. Mynameisjeff (talk) 16:53, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
Ah, ok. it wasn't important, just regarding how I knew who it was. The spam is getting redicious. I would like to propose a temp. suspension on new account creation while we determine a better vetting system as clearly what we're doing now isn't working. even the verified emails didn't help. Branch (talk) 16:56, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I have an idea on how to stop Paul Akinbola, but I'm going to have to email you guys that. Mynameisjeff (talk) 16:58, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I removed some of your previous text (and deleted the revision) to protect the confidentiality of how we find the scammers. Please do email us. My email was the @me.com one from the earlier email thread. We really need a private admin-only talk page. Branch (talk) 17:01, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
In addition to the temp. halt on new accounts, I also propose a sitewide policy that ONLY admins can move and rename pages to prevent this in the future. Branch (talk) 17:07, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
All removed, but I really think it's best to just revert/block/ignore in these situations and mass email admins. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:30, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
Pages are legitimentally moved and deleted so rarely, so making it admin only won't be an issue, it will only prevent spam. Branch (talk) 17:32, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
No, I meant not posting on this talk page about troll accounts at all, instead we should just block, clean up and ignore then mass email other admins about the situation. I agree with locking moves for admins. -MNIJ
ok so admin move and delete lock has 2/5 support. Can one more support this so we can implant asap? Regarding posting here, I didn't mean we can't post at all, but we shouldn't post our methods of discovering scammers here, otherwise they'll circumvent them. Branch (talk) 17:39, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
:D I do think we should give them less attention as possible by not posting about them here, though. -MNIJ
So that's why I'd like a private, admin only page. Easier to keep track of long threads than Email. Branch (talk) 17:43, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I have an idea: I create a discord server, then the webmaster sends you the invite by email. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:55, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
Why not just slack or something like that then? I use slack for another site and it's quite good. Branch (talk) 18:05, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
First time I heard of this, the site design is very similar to Discord's. I guess we can use that. Mynameisjeff (talk) 18:08, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm voting in favour of the page move restriction proposal. 3/5 – the motion is carried and has been implemented. Users now wishing to move a page, please let an admin know on this page. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:57, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
Regarding the right to delete pages, by default, that is already assigned to admins only. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:00, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Inactive Account Deletion

Proposal for Official Inactive Account Deletion Policy:

Accounts will be deleted if any of the following are true:

  • Account was not used for 30 days since day of creation
  • Account that does not have a verified email address in 30 days from day of creation
  • Existing Users (Users created before Feb 28) have until April 1 to do so
  • Account has not made any contributions for 6 months

Having a good-standing account (no block/ban at time of deletion) deleted due to inactivity is not grounds for a new block for multiple accounts if a new account is made. Contact the admins if you'd like your old username back.

The email part is just to let older users have an extra few week/days to verify their emails, but starting April 1, I think all non-verified accounts should be deleted after 30 days. Does that look good to the other admins?

Branch (talk) 16:53, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Branch. The first two are ok with me. However, the purge script doesn't take into consideration whether you've logged in – only if you've contributed. So in that sense, if criterion 2 occurs, criterion 1 will always occur also, given you can't make any contributions without verifying your e-mail. Regarding e-mail validation, there are many accounts that have several months of inactivity before the user returns, so I'm inclined to let e-mail verification slide for a bit longer. Similarly, for the 6-month inactivity deletion, when I went through all the accounts manually, there were accounts with more than 6 months of inactivity before the user returned, so I'm inclined to have that a bit longer also. Users also might be able to just re-create using their old username without admin intervention; I'm not sure if MediaWiki blocks re-creation of an account name that's been deleted previously. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
Just to note, seeing as a couple of users already started socking: If you're a banned member and your account was merged, you are not allowed to create the account with the same username (or any account again for that matter). If you are not a blocked user, you can create another account (with or without the same name) without any issues. Mynameisjeff (talk) 15:51, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
IMO The auto purge is unneeded in its own and only harms the community. Sure, there are unused accounts (and possibly spam accounts like all the recent accounts from the middle east and africa), but by merging them all into "Merged Users" is just creating a giant pile of mess as it's still a good idea to know who made the contribution (like what has been done to a large number of accounts recently), also not to mention that merging accounts (like what happened to SupermarioPlayer's account) with a blocked account will in cases unblock the account and we wouldn't get notified of that, and that's not something we want. Also, I know some people here who have made an account recently but don't have the chance to contribute yet due to a lack of time, and we don't want potential users to get affected by this, and there is always a chance (slim, but still a chance) that inactive users will make a contribution sooner or later. I get that it might keep the userlist tidy but I think it's just a false sense, it creates even more of a mess, especially when we purge accounts that for example were active sometime and then dropped off the radar, not to mention the unblock problem. I do agree to purge new accounts that haven't verified their email in 30 days though. Mynameisjeff (talk) 04:54, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
How about this less stringent proposal?
Deletion for:
* Any account that does not verify e-mail within 30 days of creation
* Any account with a verified e-mail address, but no contributions for 6 months since creation
* Any account that's ever made any contribution won't be deleted/merged
* Any account that's been blocked won't be deleted/merged to prevent the blocked user from making a new account under the same user name
Fine by me! Mynameisjeff (talk) 05:56, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Works for me, too. --Longislandmedia (talk) 22:47, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
How about the same as the above but you have a year with no contributions you're deleted. if you're gone for a year it's clear you don't really care about the site and it's not that hard to make a new account if you want to come back. Branch (talk) 02:38, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
I think it would still be a good idea to see who made the contribution instead of it saying "Merged users", though, that's my primary problem. Mynameisjeff (talk) 06:48, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
I don't understand what you mean-- instead of what saying merged users? Branch (talk) 18:08, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
https://www.tvchannellists.com/index.php?title=User_talk:Tvchannellists&action=history Imagine "Merged users" is instead of "mynameisjeff". See what I mean? Mynameisjeff (talk) 18:12, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Is there a way of having it say for example "Branch (Inactive) or "Branch (Deleted)" or something like that to mitigate that problem? Branch (talk) 20:41, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
No. :( Mynameisjeff (talk) 20:42, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
As an interim measure, until a consensus is reached, the first point of the proposal is in effect (deleting new accounts after 30 days of no verification/contributions), since there was agreement on that particular point. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:15, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
@TVCL, can you confirm no extension exists that allows for my idea above ("Branch (Deleted)")? Branch (talk) 16:22, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
The only extension I could find was one that would set the account as 'inactive', making the user unable to log in, but it would still leave the account on the users list, so there's not much point to it. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:38, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
Not trying to sound rude, but we should really focus more on standardizing the listings to be in 1 format (I vote for the UK/Dutch/Romanian/Serbian format) and fixing them (like I did with the UK pages yesterday) rather then purging inactive accounts. Mynameisjeff (talk) 06:28, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Regarding this, here's a modified compromise proposal:

Deletion for:
* Any account that does not verify e-mail within 30 days of creation
* Any account with a verified e-mail address, but no contributions for 30 days since creation
* Any account that's ever made any contribution won't be deleted/merged if site policies aren't violated.
* Any account that's been blocked won't be deleted/merged to prevent the blocked user from making a new account under the same user name

There's #2 from my proposal, but #3 from MNIJ. Support? Branch (talk) 17:23, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

Fine by me, but I think maybe upping #2 to 60 days is better. Mynameisjeff (talk) 17:26, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I disagree as I think anyone who wants to use their account will use it in a month. Otherwise they can recreate later. If another admin supports, we can get it passed. Branch (talk) 17:30, 5 March 2017 (UTC)
I'm happy for either 30 or 60 days. Are you two willing to accept 45 days as a compromise? Tvchannellists (talk) 00:06, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Two-factor authentication introduced

For extra account security, TV Channel Lists has introduced optional two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication requires that, in addition to entering your password, you enter a one-time use token from your mobile device, making it significantly more difficult for your account to be compromised. To enable two-factor authentication, visit your Preferences page. You should also clear your security tokens here after enabling two-factor authentication. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:50, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Just to note, you should type in your 2FA code in the format of "XXXXXX", NOT "XXX XXX", regardless of what Authy or other authentication services say. -MNIJ (talk) 09:48, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Merge My Account

Hello, im quitting TVChannelLists forever. Could you merge my account please? Alexandra (talk) 05:43, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Maria-Alexandra. Thanks for letting us know. We no longer merge accounts for users who haver made any contributions to the site. You can simply just leave. Thank you your for your contributions during your stay here. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:19, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

VisualEditor Disabled

VisualEditor has been having significant issues, locking up and taking the whole website down with it. As such, until we can resolve the issues, it has been disabled. We apologise for any inconvenience. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:07, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

Note from a second admin here: In reality, VE probably won't be re-enabled. The site runs much faster without it, and seeing as VE barely worked on most pages and when it worked it was screwing up the formatting, it's not worth it. In any case, for a wiki like this with tons of tables and images, the source editor is the only solution. And we're not the only ones that are having problems with VE; it's just the software itself. -MNIJ (talk) 09:12, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
And a clarification from a third admin-- VE will not be re-enabled UNTIL it becomes more stable. Whether that happens next week, next year, or next decade, we don't know. Once it can stay stable and not take down the website, it will return. If you are or you know someone with experience with VE and resolving its problems, let us know. Canadian stations/markets list

Per the query and posting I was in on a few days ago, I have started a Canadian page like the American (really, that one should be "U.S." but I'm not nitpicking) one, at List of Canadian over-the-air television stations (for whoever does the main page stuff); and I am working on the first 2 markets now, so they won't be red for long! Easttxtv (talk) 23:37, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi! As soon as one market is added (ie there is content on the page) I'll add it to the main page. also, regarding the name of the OTA page, the standard, for whatever reason, has been demonym, instead of country name. I've updated our guidelines page to reflect this. Branch (talk) 00:19, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Winnipeg, MB has been added. Easttxtv (talk) 01:23, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
Added Canadian to main page. thanks Branch (talk) 01:34, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Admin team changes

Hello TV Channel Lists contributors. With the implementation of the account approval system, the incidences of vandalism have essentially dropped to zero. Alongside this, the removal of VisualEditor removed the main cause of the site going down. These two factors combined have significantly reduced the need for administrative oversight on the site and in light of this, along with admins' time constraints, two of the admins (Mynameisjeff and Scythechariot) have decided to resign from being admins. Both Mynameisjeff and Scythechariot have noted that they will contribute to the site as regular users. Thank you again to all of TVCL's contributors and for sticking with us whilst we brought the spam and vandalism under control. Tvchannellists (talk) 10:34, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

No problem bud. I'll try working on getting more users to the site in the near future. Also, Happy Easter. -MNIJ (talk) 10:40, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Unprotect User Page

Can you unprotect mine and Scy's userpage, please? -MNIJ (talk) 11:28, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Done. Branch (talk) 12:29, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

"Inappropriate usernames, or usernames designed to impersonate existing users, as determined by the site admins"

I don't see the need for this seeing as usernames designed to impersonate existing users are also inappropriate. Also, I think "rollback" sounds better than "moderator" seeing as "moderators" only have rollback so it is misleading. -MNIJ (talk) 13:04, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi! I just added that for clarification, to make sure there was no confusion that usernames like those will be rejected. Branch (talk) 23:53, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Move of new channel listings

Hi Easttxtv. Thanks for your contributions to the site. We don't normally list new or updated channel listings on the TVCL talk page, as such, we've moved the entry to your talk page. Feel free to continue to post the new and revised channel listings there. Thank you again on behalf of the admin team for all your hard work – it's much appreciated. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:42, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Merge Me

I have been sick of TVCL. Could you merge my user please? Thanks. Alexandra (talk) 13:39, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Maria-Alexandra. If you are 'sick of' the site, all you need to do is stop visiting the site. Merging your account won't do achieve anything additional to you simply leaving. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:10, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

TVCL in YOUR Language!

We're proud to enable the Google Translate widget on our site, which enables viewers from across the globe to view our site in their native language. To get started, simply click the Select Language button in our sidebar, and pick your language. Google will take care of the rest. We hope this is the first step in implanting a translation service that will translate the page automatically to a user's native language without any clicks needed. For now though, enjoy! Moldova

Admin note: This discussion topic has been moved to this page from the Main Page talk page.

Hi admins, could you add Moldova to the main page? So far, I've made these lists:

Analog Cable
Digital Cable
IPTV
Online
Master lists

Afelix (talk) 07:11, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for adding those lists, Afelix. I will add them to the main page shortly. In future, please use the Contact the Admins page which is actively monitored so that your requests aren't missed. Thanks again. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:56, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
I will. Thanks. I wasn't really sure whether I should ask here or on the other page. Afelix (talk) 01:00, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
No problem. I've added the Moldovan entries now. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:04, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

New channel lineup, question, and idea

Hello. This past weekend, I created the lineup List of SCRTC channels in Allen County, Kentucky. However, I would like to change the name to "List of SCRTC channels in Allen and Monroe counties in Kentucky" as the lineup covers more than one single county. Can you all do that? I couldn't find a button on my end. Also, I was wondering if, under the cable section in United States, that lineups be put under states. I plan on going county-by-county in Kentucky, and though it would be nice to go to a page that had a wikitable containing counties and what channel lineups are located in those counties. I hope this information helps. God bless! Matthewshill (talk) 21:13, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Matthew. Thank you for your message. I have renamed the page you mentioned. Regarding the change to the front page, I'm not in the United States, so perhaps one of our American admins can provide feedback on whether they think that will work. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:35, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
Since the other admins haven't responded, what do you think about adding an entry on the front page for state-based listings? As I'm assuming some of the other providers have the same channel numbering nationwide and thus don't need to fall under state listings.
For example, we can have something like:
State-based providers:
CA | NY | KY | MN | WV, etc.
Tvchannellists (talk) 09:14, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
I would recommend leaving the national cable providers on the main page and a link for regional cable providers like SCRTC, which can then be broken-up into states or companies. I'm doing similar with Charter Spectrum. --Washuotaku (talk) 12:50, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
sorry I haven’t been in lately. I too think under the cable subheader a regional providers link would be good. Branch (talk) 00:33, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi all. This has been implemented now. Tvchannellists (talk) 02:02, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
Hello, I went ahead creating the Regional Providers page by incorporating Adams Cable, Atlantic Broadband, Blue Ridge and Vyve. The companies relocated to the new page can be removed from the front page and their link list pages redirected at the Admin's desecration. I hope this is what @Matthewshill: had in mind as well, which we can both modify further. --Washuotaku (talk) 04:30, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for creating that, @Washuotaku:. It's looking good. Tvchannellists (talk) 04:52, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of old Sky files

Sky did a redesign of their entertainment channels on 9 October 2017 and I added the logos. Can I ask if one removes the old versions? POWERStarz2004 (talk) 23:01, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for updating the logos, POWERStarz2004. If there aren't any pages using the old logos, I'm fine with their deletion if that's what you want to do. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:11, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
Yep, I'm asking for my Scot/Wales/NI/Ireland extra pages to be deleted just so I can stick to one as well. The "Sky 1" and "Sky 2" files can be deleted because they were renamed to be word instead of numeric POWERStarz2004 (talk) 23:24, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
Also, this page: User:POWERStarz2004/England deleted too, I'll merge it into the main page POWERStarz2004 (talk) 23:26, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
Extra pages deleted:

Hello there. In this wiki, there is a lineup named List of Take channels in the Israeli List. However, I would like to change the name to "List of Partner TV channels" because of two reasons: First, Partner's lineup is more expansive than Take's. Second, Partner is mor known in the country than Take. As an admin, can you all do that? I couldn't find the Edit button on my end. Thanks in advance, Daniel a.k.a User:DaPersonB97 (talk) 16:05, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi DaPersonB97. Sure. I've done this for you now. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:20, 4 November 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much. Keep up the good work that you're doing for this sacred wiki. Daniel a.k.a User:DaPersonB97 (talk) 16:41, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Add Spectrum to Main Page

Hello, I am requesting that Spectrum be added under United States --> Cable on the Main Page. I have created a new page for Spectrum in my Sandbox, which will eventually also replace Bright House Networks and Time Warner Cable once there channel lists have been fully updated/integrated. Thank you! --Washuotaku (talk) 13:03, 7 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Washuotaku. Thanks for your message and your contributions. I'll be happy to add Spectrum to the front page for you. Let me know once you've created the actual page (as opposed to the Sandbox page) and I will add it to the front page then. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:46, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
Hello! Please link List of Spectrum channels and remove Bright House Networks and Time Warner Cable on the main page at your convenience. Please also take off Adams Cable, Atlantic Broadband, Blue Ridge and Vyve as they are now rolling into Regional Providers Thanks again! --Washuotaku (talk) 04:02, 13 November 2017 (UTC)
Hi Washuotaku. Thanks. This is all done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:11, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Admin change

ScytheChariot has resigned from his admin position due to insufficient time. He has nominated Kalman2007 to take his place and this change has now taken effect. Welcome, Kalman2007, to the admin team. Tvchannellists (talk) 00:19, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

Welcome! Branch (talk) 00:34, 8 November 2017 (UTC)

Joyne

Hello, I have added the channel list for Joyne: List of channels on Joyne. Could this be added to the main page? It is a satellite provider in the Netherlands. C0re1980 (talk)

Thanks, C0re1980. This has been done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:20, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Bengal Digital

Hello. I would like to request a page for the Bangladeshi TV provider Bengal Digital. Thank you.

Hi RandomMe98. You should be able to create the page yourself. Once it's created, I can then link to it on the front page for you. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:21, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
Hello again. Sorry for the delay. Here's the page: List of channels on Bengal Digital A reminder that more channels will be added in the coming days. Thank you.
No problem. This has been done now. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:29, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Update to Optimum

Hello again, I have another request to change the link for Optimum to List of Optimum channels (under United States --> Cable). I have incorporated the one channel line-up into the new main page for Optimum and listed its other systems in the three states it serves. Thank you. --Washuotaku (talk) 18:23, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Doesn't the link for "Optimum" on the front page already go to List of Optimum channels? Tvchannellists (talk) 13:29, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
Yes, you already updated the page same day I posted this request. Thank you! --Washuotaku (talk) 05:01, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

Comcast (Xfinity) and LHTC

I'd like to request a link be added on the main page under United States cable for Xfinity by Comcast and a link under United States IPTV for LHTC Broadband. Thanks.

JK77 (talk) 02:27, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, JK77. Thanks for your message. Sure, I can create this link for you, but you need to create the pages and listings first before I am able to link to them. Let me know when you have and I'll be happy to make the link for you. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:31, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
I created the Xfinity page at https://www.tvchannellists.com/List_of_Xfinity_channels, and the two that should be listed under US IPTV: LHTC - https://www.tvchannellists.com/List_of_LHTC_Broadband_channels and Citizens Fiber - https://www.tvchannellists.com/List_of_Citizens_Fiber_channels. The last two are small, regional operators in Pennsylvania. --JK77 (talk) 15:22, 23 November 2017 (UTC)JK77
Hi JK77. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. This has been done now. Thanks again for your contributions. Tvchannellists (talk) 13:01, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

Inactive and Messages

Hey,

I will be inactive on Tvchannellists and on the internet. All websites will be 16+, like Moviestarplanet, Roblox, etc. And im really too young.

So, in new year could you merge my account please? I will no longer go on this website.

Thanks,

User:Maria-Alexandra make wrong edits

I have a problem on romanian aria where User:Maria-Alexandra change the subjects in wrong way. Someone can ban him?

Hi Queron. I've updated the block applied by Kalman to permanent as he himself also said he wanted to be removed from the site. Tvchannellists (talk) 01:26, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Apologies

I'm really sorry lately I haven't been active here. Life caught up with me, so I had to take a step back. But I'm recommitted to this site, and am working now to update the FiOS listings, which haven't been updated in a few months. I probably won't be as active as I was when I first joined, but I'll definitely be on here more often then the past few months. Branch (talk) 21:42, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Branch. No problem. Thanks for the update and welcome back! Tvchannellists (talk) 02:44, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Disclaimers & Policy Updates

Comments in Local Time

Hi all. I upgraded Comments in Local Time Gadget to a new version, that works WAY better, and is way more user-friendly. It's pretty nice. Branch (talk) 02:44, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

PageDiff

I installed the PageDiff extension, so you can see what someone changed in your email notification without clicking in to the site. Useful to see if it's something you need to respond/act on or can ignore. Branch (talk) 01:54, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for that, Branch. Tvchannellists (talk) 03:48, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

ITV Encore

When ITV Encore closes, delete the logo from the site as it's no longer in use. POWERStarz2004 (talk) 19:38, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

@Tvchannellists: how do we usually handle this? Branch (talk) 23:30, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
@Branch: I'm not sure that we have a set policy on this. I assume in the past the logos were just left on the site, but I don't have an issue with deleting them if the channel's been closed. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:40, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
@Tvchannellists: Thanks for the info. POWERStarz2004 (talk) 15:01, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi! Could you place 180x180 Favicon PNG in the root document folder called apple-touch-icon.png so our site shows up nice and pretty on iOS? Thanks! Branch (talk) 01:11, 12 May 2018 (UTC) Also, something appears to be broken with the Echo Notifications. I have one, but I can't clear it... Branch (talk) 21:51, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi @Branch:. I've placed the iOS favicon into root folder. Not sure what's going on with Echo. I'll run the maintenance scripts now and see if that helps. Tvchannellists (talk) 11:59, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
Looks nice! Echo still doesn't work... oh well! Branch (talk) 22:45, 13 May 2018 (UTC)

Suddenlink => Altice USA

I was going to add some Suddenlink info/listings but didn't realize there had been an acquisition. I saw the Optimum section but I didn't want to put any Suddenlink info there since none of their systems were part of Cablevision before. Should I add the info now or wait till the section is updated with the Altice info/logo? Easttxtv (talk) 05:46, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for adding more information to the site, Easttxtv. Since @Branch: and @Longislandmedia: are in the US, they're probably more qualified to decide than me, so I'll let one of them respond to this. Hopefully, one of them will be along soon. Tvchannellists (talk) 07:20, 11 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi @tvchannellists: and @Easttxtv:! I've heard about the mergers... tomorrow I will read up about them to make sure I update the site with accurate info, and then will do so as needed. I'll ping this thread when I do. Thanks so much as always! Branch (talk) 02:54, 12 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi @tvchannellists: and @Easttxtv:! it appears that for now Altice is keeping the suddenlink and optimum names, albeit under the Altice banner, with plans to eventually rename them both to Altice. Based on this, check out what I did on the homepage, and let me know if it's ok. As for new lineup names, continue to follow the format outlined in the guidelines, using the names Suddenlink and Optimum. When the transition fully occurs, I'll take care of changing them to Altice. Thanks! Branch (talk) 00:15, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
I have updated the Suddenlink section with logo, paraphased history from Wikipedia, listed all the states/systems (more than I thought they had!), and have started it off with 3 channel lists so far. I guess it's all right so far. Easttxtv (talk) 13:45, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your contributions, Easttxtv. It's much appreciated. Tvchannellists (talk) 15:21, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Where to go from here ?

Messrs Branch and Longislandmedia -

Here are copies of a conversation I have been having with tvchannellists. I will drop a copy of a sample Excel in the 'drop files here'; hopefully that will attach it. Wrong again - looks like I can only attach png and jpeg files. Boy, is that handy!

Hi Gary,

Yes, I would think that the initial input of the data would take a considerable amount of time; however, subsequent weekly changes would take considerable less time given I assume that only a small of changes occur each week.

There are two American-based admins on the site, Longislandmedia and Branch, who may be able/willing to assist. I would advise that you write a message on this page to see if they're able to help: https://www.tvchannellists.com/User_talk:Tvchannellists

Thanks again.

The attached Excel will give you a sense of the Weekly data I produce, in this sample, for Directv Domestic.
My problem is that I cannot imagine the time it would require for me to update your current formats using the rather simple editor that I used just to make a couple simple updates in the Directv Cinema HD and SD channel numbers. This appears to be a prohibitively labor intensive process both initially and on a weekly update basis. Is that true ??
If you have trusted staff members who might be allowed to automate this process, I would be happy to provide them weekly updates. Are there any other alternatives ?

From User gct

hi! There are many excel to wiki table converters on the web. Once that’s done, you can copy and paste the wiki table onto our editor. it should be easy to maintain on a weekly basis. Let me know if you have any questions. Branch (talk) 19:25, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

I await your verdict

Thanks for the direction, Branch.

I sincerely hope I have not caused any heart attacks.

Because it is relatively small, I used SKY_Mexico as my first trial. You'll see that I have uploaded a SKY_HD page, a SKY_SD page and a SKY_Audio page, each title includes an update date, so they are obvious.

I will intrude no further until I get a vote of confidence back from you Admins.

You are so far out of date that much has changed for SKY_Mexico. The IS21, predominantly SD satellite has gone away. All channels are now on the new SKY_M1 satellite. There is no longer a duplication of SD and HD channels i.e. there are SD channels, but when an SD channel upgrades to HD, the SD channel is deleted. Without all the duplication, the number of channels is greatly reduced.

You now have 24 pages of SKY_Mexico information. I have updated only three. May of those 24 pages reflect information from the now defunct IS21 Network. These need to be deleted.

Many of your 24 pages are groupings of the channels by interest or 'package'. I do not propose to maintain these files. They are all sub-groupings of the master data in the HD or SD pages. The groupings by 'package' are changed regularly by the marketing/sales folks. Keeping up with those changes is a maddening task and provides little value for us.

I await your response. If my Login ID is removed, I will take that as a response....  :)

gct

Hi! First, know we rarely if ever delete user accounts for edits made in good faith-- and we have tons of backups just in case. AFAIK we don't have any admins who work heavily on the Mexico lineups, which is probably why they're so out of date. It's kind of confusing since there's SKY, SKY HD, DirecTV SKY and DirecTV Mexico lineups. Put this tag {{Deletion Move}} where you want me to look. it will show as it does below this message. Thanks so much-- the tables you added look great! (also @Tvchannellists:, I made that tag just now, feel free to edit any part of it) Branch (talk) 22:49, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Icon.png   This page (or part of page) has been nominated for deletion or a move to a new name.
When you place this tag, please give the admins a heads up with a link to this page so they can review.

Thanks for making that template, Branch. I think it looks good. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:56, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

SKY_Mexico Cleanup

For SKY_Mexico, many pages have been marked as Deletion Requested. These pages are all out-of-date sub-sets of the data. SKY_Mexico is the only operational entity name; it is owned (over 51%) by Directv but 'Directv' is no longer used as part of the name.

In the Mexico category: For the SKY-HD grouping, that entire topic (?) and all associated pages should be deleted. For the Directv-Mexico grouping, that entire topic and all associated pages should be deleted.

Latin America

El Branch:

Please create a grouping/category (it surely has a name) for me under the Latin America entry. I assume you need to build that high level category and then I can add subordinate pages within the category. That high level name should be:

Satellite

DLA - DIRECTV Latin America

Thank You. Again.

gct

No problem. Basically, a "Page" is anything on one URL. "Section" is anything under a header in the page. So on the Sky TV page, there are headers for SD Channels, HD Channels, and Music Channels. You can also reply to this topic by editing this page and typing directly below this message, starting your message with one more colon that I started mine with (as a colon is an indent). Here is the page for DTV Latin America List of channels on DirecTV (Latin_America) (I'll add it to our homepage soon). Also, feel free to add colors to the listings. (totally optional). We don't have a set pattern, some listings use colors to denote packages, some to denote type of channel (news, entertainment, etc). Also, what should I do with VETV por Sky? Thanks so much!! Branch (talk) 00:19, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Colors Don't Work

Branch, I initially tried using our standard built-in colors, but when I paste them in, those columns (or cells) display as deep, almost black, cells, with nothing else visible. I'm using a converter (detailed in the posts themselves) that is implemented as an Excel macro. If there is a way to color cells, not whole rows, that would be great.

gct

Need to Find a Fix

I need to go off and find a fix that allows me to carry forward the shaded cells in Excel. Much information is provided by different fonts, font sizes, italic fonts and color shaded cells -- unfortunately these characteristics seem to be ignored when loaded into your editor.

Progress of Sorts

Please take a look at the Direct Latin America Page (DLA) and the SKY_Mexico Page. These presentations now use fewer sections because the data is defined more clearly now using color - just as the all the source documentation does. Maintaining this data and keeping it accurate just became reasonable - in other words, instead of the labor-intensive, error-intensive process of updating this data, I can poke in a complete and accurate update all at once.

ALSO - I do not yet have a good answer for you regarding VeTV in Mexico. I -think- it is a marketing spin-off of SKY_Mexico, not a real competitor. However, I have asked our colleague in Mexico to educate me...

DirecTV USA Listings

@Gct: Thanks for the updates to the DirecTV USA page. I'll let the other admins (@Branch: and @Longislandmedia:) add their inputs as well, but I think that the previous formatting for the DirecTV page was more user-friendly. The genre-based colouring, links to the Wikipedia pages and package details were useful information that is now lost.

There's probably also a bit too much data on the page. For example, I would think that for subscribers, columns such as 'network' and 'display' would not be of much use. Locals should probably be on a separate page to prevent the main DirecTV page from being unnecessarily long and having a long loading time. Tvchannellists (talk) 09:55, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

The old version of the list was based on the old Wikipedia listing which is why it worked on some levels. This list probably is more technical than even what's included in the Lyngsat charts. Also, the new chart has removed the channels that are not 24-7 stations like the regional sports network overflow channels and seasonal out-of-market subscription sports packages. The chart omits the channel numbers for MSG Western New York, MSG 2, MSG Plus 2, MASN 2, Fox Sports Tennessee, Fox Sports Carolinas, NBC Sports Chicago Plus, NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB Extra Innings, and other such channels. Also, there is now Fox Sports Cincinnati, the channel is actually the Fox Sports Ohio feed for the Cincinnati area. The channels have been a split of the same network due to team territory blackouts going back to when they were under the SportsChannel name.

I also would prefer the channels kept sequentially with HD and SD noted separately where the same channel is carried in both formats. The list of local channels is a good addition but probably should be a separate listing due to it making the file extremely huge. Again, I would suggest listing by channel number with SD and HD notices as one list for each market. Channels which are only being delivered in significantly viewed areas should have an SV notification. For example, in the Hartford market, most subscribers do not get the NYC, Providence, or Boston channels that are available in certain areas as part of the Hartford local lineup. Since these charts are aimed more at people looking at the providers as subscribers, the information should be easy for them to understand. The satellite information has some value because most dishes installed now mainly are to aim at 99, 101, and 103 with 119 using only being installed for those who want Spanish programming or live in markets with locals on 119, and then 95 is only aimed at international customers. --Longislandmedia (talk) 21:06, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

Your Direction

Thank you for the response. I still have perhaps half of the Directv-USA Local-into-Local section yet to upload, but I will stop right where we are. Please let me know what direction you and your admins decide upon.

I trust that you know your viewership. If you think the previous formatting with genre-based colors and masses of links to Wikipedia best serves your users, you clearly need to roll back to that presentation. The package details can be scrubbed from the Directv website and updated. Perhaps you can use my input as a source for your manual updating and ongoing maintenance.

For Directv Domestic, as you suggested, viewers not finding value in the Network or Display columns will also not need the Satellite column.

For SKY_Mexico, you will need to delete the Network, TPN, Satellite and Display columns. Or perhaps rolling back to your previous presentation will be preferable.

For Directv Latin America (DLA) you have a dilemma. Your readers need a comprehension of Network and Display to be able to determine what channels are provided to Ecuador, for example.

I much respect the time and effort invested in your previous presentations; they obviously fulfill your viewer’s expectations.

~~gct~~

Hi @GCT: Given Longislandmedia's comments, for the time being, I have reverted the US DirecTV page to its previous formatting. I think your suggestion of using your data as a basis for providing updates to the page is a good one. As I don't edit the DirecTV page myself, I'll let the other admins further discuss the details of how that can work. What was missing from our previous data, however, were the local channels. I would suggest that these should go into a separate page with just the local listings to prevent the main page from being excessively long. Tvchannellists (talk) 22:57, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi again Gct. I've moved your local channel information for DirecTV to its own page here: List of local channels on DirecTV
If the other admins are happy with this, please add links to this new page on the homepage and the main DirecTV page. Thanks. Tvchannellists (talk) 23:14, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
cool with me, though I think it would be cleaner to just have it linked from the existing DTV page. Branch (talk) 14:09, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
Sure. That's fine with me also. Tvchannellists (talk) 08:15, 5 July 2018 (UTC)

About VeTV

Here is the response from our colleague in Mexico regarding VeTV:

Is part of SkyMx, http://www.vetv.com.mx

Is a Low end service, No HD o Too little, is for families who can’t afford Sky.

What I Know is that they use the same Sat, but the channels are limited.

Is owned by Sky or Televisa for sure.

Same programming but less channels, I see it as the pre-pay version of the north, without being pre-pay
