Archive:List of channels on Kosmos TV (June 2001)
Kosmos-TV was established in 1991 as a Russian-American joint venture established by the State Center for Television and Radio Broadcasting (Ostankino) and a consortium led by American tech company ITI (International Telcell Inc.). The company was one of the most experienced operators in the cable television market in Moscow and environs. Kosmos-TV's clients included tens of thousands of both individual and corporate clients, including representatives of Russian and foreign businesses, government and administrative institutions, foreign embassies, and many others.
With the advent of Cosmos-TV, Russian viewers got the opportunity to watch an additional 8 world-famous foreign TV channels in analog format, among which was one of the largest American news channels - CNN International. By the late 90s, the number of channels had risen to 20.
In 2000 the company was one of the first to begin the transition to more technologically advanced and high-quality digital broadcasting, while not disregarding its own content. The switch to digital enabled Kosmos TV to, within a year, practically triple the number of channels available. By that time the operator was at its apex in terms of popularity and subscribers.
In July 2012, the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) held a competition for the distribution of frequencies in the 2.5-2.7 GHz range, on which Kosmos-TV broadcast, under LTE networks. The commission also ruled that the company would have to stop broadcasting when its signal interfered with the LTE signal. Each company - the winner of the competition paid the company 274 million rubles as compensation. Cosmos-TV, however, sued the State Committee for Radio Frequencies, but the consideration of the case was postponed due to the settlement agreement now being prepared.
On September 1, 2012, Kosmos-TV shut down. The frequencies of the TV operator were given to the LTE networks of four telecom operators - MTS, VimpelCom (Beeline), MegaFon and Rostelecom. Cosmos-TV subscribers from the company's accounts were refunded for connecting to the TV operator. In addition, Cosmos-TV, as a contractor, offered its customers preferential terms for connecting to MGTS television. The connection itself will be free, and the monthly cost of the service package will be 100 rubles.
