DIRECTV Latin America was launched in late 1996 in Mexico as Galaxy Latin America, a joint-venture between Hughes Electronics (then parent company), Cisneros Group from Venezuela, MVS Multivisión from Mexico and Televisão Abril from Brazil. Starting there the service roll out into others countries of Latin America, forming new ventures like in Chile (with VTR, forming VTR Galaxy, sold and then merged with in 2005 to Sky Chile) and the Caribbean (with Caribbean Communications Network, forming Galaxy Caribbean, selling it in 2000 back to Cisneros Group, owner of the 50% of the company).

The very-first channel lineup of DIRECTV in Latin America was used between 1996 and May 1, 1999, when was reorganized for the first time. At this moment the service was only available in Mexico and Brasil.
